How old is the van it could be the rod linkages from lever to the gearbox. They are ball and socket fittings could be worn or need lube. Get the van on ramps or axle stands to check it out. To see what they look like have a search on here.
Are we there yet?????

If the gearbox was working ok before you parked it up I would be inclined to suspect a linkage rod problem.
Get a helper to go through the gears whilst you view the operation of the linkage from under the bonnet, you may be able to spot the problem that's causing 3rd not to work.

hello every body
sorry to be so long from last post but aint been in best of form.now just to update you on state of transmission, had van checked for mot . and got mechanic to check all linkages and rods, every thing ok on outside so problem must be inside box, so will probably sell van as spares or repairs as a gearbox would be cost prohibitive . unless you have any suggs on how to fix
thanks for now

I would get a 2nd opinion, your own.
As I said observe the linkages from under the bonnet, look at the position they are in when the box is in 4th, 3rd will be straight back from this when viewed from the front of the vehicle, watch the operation of the linkages when your helper tries to shift from 4th to 3rd.
Take the linkages off and try to engage 3rd gear by hand.
It would be extremely unlikely for the box to develop an internal fault when not being used.
