Question about the Brake and clutch pedals
#1
Hi all,

Last week I drove a few Berlingo's (1.6 petrol) and while all of them pretty much drove the same, I do worry about the brakes and clutch.

The brakepedals were really hard and I needed to put my entire weight on it before anything happend. And with anything I dont neccecarily mean that much happend.
I dont recall my old 1.9D having brakes this bad, but sinds all Berlingo's I drove this week had the same issue its got me thinking.

And the clutchpedal felt a little off on all of them. They felt loose, like even looking at the pedal made it drop to the floor and the biting point was very low.
If my memory is correct, isnt the clutch cable operated? Do those cables wear out?

Not all have cables for the clutch, the 1.6 M59 & maybe B9 engines use a hydraulic clutch. The M59 has a known problem with the clutch pedal bush wearing out.
Not sure what's wrong with the brakes tho.

My dads 1.6 HDI M59 is a Hydraulic set up but even then its a bit heaver than most hydraulic setups i've driven. As for the brakes usually they are spongy and light due to the nightmare of trying to bleed them is.

Does the bushing cause a Squeak every you push or lift up on it when its worn ?

The van I ended up buying has a clutchpedal with a cabel. And while the pedal itself feels solid (No play or squeaks comming from the bushing) the clutch feels a bit too light with a very high biting point.

Now I know its normal for a Berlingo clutch to be quit high up, so im not too bothered about that. Cable could use some adjusting probably.

And on this van the brakepedal is rocksolid, but the discs and pads are shot. That and some tlc to the drums should solve the braking issue.

The clutch bushing being worn will definitely cause a squeak.
Mine did this and new bushes sorted it out ( M59 1.6 HDi hydraulic clutch )

There are a few posts describing new bushes and the sources other than Citroen Genuine, I bought mine from eBay for small money and a minor mod later the job was done - 1 hr max at a lazy rate of work.

While all is apart check the slave cylinder rod is secure in the clevis as they can slacken off !!

You're lucky, it'd be easier to push a pallet of bricks along the floor than it is pushing my clutch pedal, very heavy, and quite common apparently. I've disconnected the cable and pedal to see if they were seized and they're fine so it must be the clutch/fork itself.
