About to buy a Berlingo
#1
Hi, we are about to buy a 2017 Berlingo semi auto and then, separately,  two of our friends have gone into teeth sucking mode with dire warnings over the turbo being unreliable. We were very keen but our confidence has been dented by their warnings of impending doom!! I would be interested with any feedback from forum members as to any known faults or otherwise. We currently have a 2014 Renault Captur which has been pretty hassle free. Thanks. Nigel

They seem to suffer if oil servicing is neglected, and the oil is left to degrade and cook in the turbo. Not letting it idle and cool down after pulling hard also causes problems, but honestly this is a malady that can affect all TDI engines, not just the Citroen or Peugeot HDi engines. I've had 3 Berlingos and 2 were 1.6 HDi, never had any turbo issues, and would say from being on here nearly 10 years, it's not all that common.

I'd have no hesitation in recommending one, and as I say I've had a few. All cars give problems if not looked after. Some folk leave oil till it goes like tar and wonder why they fail.

Turbos are picky about oil, cooling and generally not getting shut off when red hot. Diesels put a lot of both soot, fuel and sulphates into the oil as a by product of running so regular oil changes are very important.

Just check the service history as with any car, and try to get one with reasonable mileage on it, you shouldn't go far wrong. Once you get it and it's running well, get the oil and filters done then just keep that up every 8k to 10k miles and you would likely never have a problem.

The semi auto (EGS gearbox) is what would activate the teeth sucking mode for me not the turbo.

There's been quite a few reports of jerky gear changes and the drive being snatchy when manoeuvring slowly, you may want to do a little research on the gearbox.
