tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS)
#1
thinking of putting some alloys on my berlingo 2020 van but i have been told that not until i have my tyres taken off the steel rims that he will not know if the if the valves with the TPMS will swap over to the new alloys if not its a extra £100 for new valves does anyone know if they will transfer over any help would be appreciated Sean.

Hello everyone.....
Direct TPMS directly measures tire pressure using hardware sensors. In each wheel, most often on the inside of the valve, there is a battery-driven pressure sensor which transfers pressure information to a central control unit which reports it to the vehicle's onboard computer. Some units also measure and alert temperatures of the tire as well. These systems can identify under-inflation for each
individual tire. Although the systems vary in transmitting options, many TPMS products (both OEM and aftermarket) can display realtime, individual tire pressures whether the vehicle is moving or parked. There are many different solutions, but all of them have to face the problems of exposure to hostile environments. The majority are powered by batteries which limit their useful life. Some sensors utilise a wirless system similar to that used in RFID tag reading which solves the problem of limited battery life. This also increases the frequency of data transmission up to 40 Hz and reduces the sensor weight which can be important in motorsport applications. If the sensors are mounted on the outside of the wheel, as are some aftermarket systems, they are subject to mechanical damage, aggressive fluids, as well as theft. When mounted on the inside of the rim, they are no longer easily accessible for battery change and the RF link must overcome the attenuating effects of the tire which increases the energy need.
A direct TPMS sensor consists of the following main functions requiring only a few external components — e.g. battery, housing, PCB — to get the sensor module that is mounted to the valve stem inside the tire:

  • pressure sensor;

  • analog-digital converter;

  • microcontroller;

  • system controller;

  • oscillator;

  • radio frequency transmitter;

  • low frequency receiver, and

  • voltage regulator (battery management).

My 68 plate doesnt have TPS in the wheels - Citroen now work on the rolling diameter of the wheel to determine if you have a tyre down or not.

I am now on my second set of tyres and all have standard valves but i do have tyre monitoring

I have also been told [by tyre fitter] that my 68 plate K9 uses indirect TPS based on the speed of rotation of individual tyres and not individual pressure sensors. This seems to make sense as individual tyre pressures are not reported anywhere on the dashboard, just that tyre pressure is 'ok'. In that case, what does the Reinitialisation of the Pressure Monitoring System [tyres cold, car stopped] actually do??

The TPMS gets its data from the ABS system , if one wheel goes faster than the rest then it may mean the tyre pressure is down. There will be a difference between wheels because slightly tyre pressures and wear on the tread  could give a different rolling diameter over time.

The reinitialisation of the system gives it a starting point that it knows is good.
