Auto clutch judder moving off
#1
Hi

Looking for some advice please from those better versed than myself . I recently bought a 2014 model Berlingo 1.6 90 bhp auto diesel 56k fsh ex motorbility .
During test drive and first week drove perfect , after that developed the dreaded judder on move off in first and reverse manoeuvring etc.
Took it into Citreon and they said the clutch had been auto adjusted over the 7000 mk and they would not reset it as it might render it undriveable.
Back to where I bought it , picked up a week later again drove it home and for a week it was perfect , my guess is he knows about this problem and is somehow getting it temporarily adjusted so it works ok when I pick it up . ( I might well be wrong I’m not a mechanic so I accept I might be talking nonsense )

The upshot is Citreon want £1500 to replace the clutch , so my question for some advice is , A. will fitting a new clutch and resetting it cure this juddering ?  and part two of the question is are there cheaper places available to do the same job ? I am in Essex if anyone can point me in the right direction please ?

Thanks for reading this and any help given , I think I’ve been had over but it’s one of them that’s very difficult to prove I’m just gonna have to bite the bullet .

I think it's more that the semi auto is pretty rare and perceived as troublesome so most people avoid them. Not many folk on here have the same gearbox as you do.

The clutch judder issue is not confined to semi autos though, my clutch judders on pulling away in my van which is a manual, when it's cold. I've come to think it's uneven steel tempering of the pressure plate fingers. It gets better when fully warmed up and I've just come to live with it.  I can't see how anyone could get it to behave for a week then fail again.

When you say Citroen tell you it's been adjusted over the 7000 mark, what do you think they mean by that? 7000 what etc. And £1500 for a clutch is daylight robbery. Ok I know the engine probably has to be pulled to do the clutch on the HDi, but that's still a lot of money.

There's a good independent Citroen garage owner called Mark Lightfoot (known as Lighty on here) who may be able to help or advise you better. He is usually around at some point. You can try looking him up and sending a PM. He may be in your neck of the woods too.

Just had a dig through my B9 documentation and there is an auto adjuster for the clutch wear - but to reset it looks to require the gearbox to come off. Not sure if this guy is doing that every time you take it back, but there's a special tool required to reset the clutch auto adjustment mechanism built into the clutch cover.

I've attached the docs on the clutch so you can see the info for yourself. May help in diagnosing or repairing it at another garage.

Adjusting the clutch on diagbox cures the issue for a few days.
This is why we don’t bother doing it anymore.
Car will need a new clutch & flywheel , after this it will drive perfectly.
Without working it out to the penny, I am quite sure it’s under £1k if we do it.
I have changed lots & lots of these Smile

Lighty's website doesn't work any more - @Lighty, have you got another site or have you retired from all things Berlingo?!!

Oh dear, our deepest sympathies to Mark's family from all on the forum I'm sure. If Isaac ever reads this which he may not, Mark was a treasured member for many years and I'm certain he will be missed by all who knew him.
