2.0HDI dipstick length.
#1
I'm well practiced on oil changes.

Did the engine oil and filter change on the berlingo yesterday, everywhere says 4.5litres oil quantity. the refill took just under 4 litres. which is now just over max on the dipstick. Dash display also reads max but I don't trust electronic oil levels anyway. It would appear it should have another half litre in at least but this would take it well over the max.

The dipstick isn't a snug fit in the top and with that and the quantity difference I'm suspicious it might be the wrong stick.

Measurement from where the tube sits to the max mark is 505mm which does tally with some aftermarket ones so long as they're measuring from the same point.

Could anybody with a 2.0 HDI possible measure their stick to confirm.

I've spent the morning ringing round dealers to see if they had one in I could compare to but no locals have them in stock.

The drain plug hole in the sump is actually raised a bit, so you can never get it all out. There's a fair bit stuck in the sump pan that can't escape. No idea why they did it like that.

Also it clings to all the surfaces so may all add up, including what's sitting around the valve gear as well.

I've never found any vehicle to take the full whack that a dry rebuilt engine would. I add half of what it says, then a half litre at a time, checking after 5 mins each time. If it goes over, I let some out.

No doubt someone will turn up with the length of the dip stick for you to confirm.

Now you mention it the sump plug is in a strange place. I usually warm the engine a bit, not up to full temp but just enough to thin the oil, leave it sitting for a bit to run back to the sump and then drain it out to get as much of it as possible out.

I've always found on my previous vehicles they do take pretty much the recommended amount.

Just measured the dipstick on my '04 2.0 hdi - as you said , mine is 505 mm from where it sits at the top of the tube to the max level mark .

That's brilliant, thank you very much for doing that.

It looks like it is the correct dipstick in mine then.

Looks like it - my oil level is spot on the max mark on the
dipstick , which also shows as full on the dash level readout .

I bought a five litre Motul 8100 5W40 and about less than half a litre is what got left, so I think it should be around 4.5l.
