Having changed the oil and filter on my 2013 1.6 hdi today I'm struck by the fact that it took way longer than it should have. This was largely down to the under tray removal which involved jacking the van up, dealing with siezed bolts in captive nuts, repairing broken lugs, finding replacement fixings, etc, etc.
I'm sure we've all had the same experiences but it seems odd that there isn't any access to the sump plug via a hole in the under tray? What harm, if any, do you see in cutting a suitable hole for future use? It would certainly make it far less of a chore when the next oil change comes round and I'd be far less likely to put it off.
Any thoughts?

I looked under my new to me Berlingo and got out the oil suction pump and got just over 5 litres oil out , it was showing overfilled , quicker and easier and don't think there was much old oil left in.
I did cut a hole in the Skoda (plastic) sump tray and fitted a quick drain tap , I keep a bit of plastic hose to fit over the spout to direct the used oil into a 5 litre plastic container ready for the recycler. No mess and no stuck screws etc.
Will eventually do the Berlingo the same way.

I'd never considered the suction option until today and it had increasing appeal as the day wore on. May well investigate that one further, I'm getting too old for crawling about under old vehicles.

Aye me too. And if you watched Saskaks videos on measuring what's left in the sump, it's almost half a litre of old oil if you drain it using the sump plug. He proved it by measuring the contents after hours of draining.

In Saskaks videos he explains that the old sump he removed retained as much oil because it was dented, the new sump that wasn't dented retained around 275ml of liquid (He used Water for the demonstration)

I modified my sump a while back by pulling the recess where the drain plug sits outwards and the extra oil that I was able to get out was around 250ml.

On the subject of using the suction method for oil removal, personally I can't see any reason why it wouldn't be fine, especially if you had the vehicle raised up at one side so the oil ran to the other side and you positioned the suction tube accordingly.
