Speedo fault?
#1
Hi Guys

Brand new user here as I have just bought my van!  I have a weird problem .. before I took delivery (it's a 2009) the instrument panel was dead so the dealer got it repaired and said it was a "loose wire"  .. Now everything works except the speedo BUT only when you first start it!! If you go down the road to the local shop you have no speedo. Then get back in the van and the speedo works perfectly!!  Seems it has to have an initial trip then afterwards it's fine.

Anyone have any answers to this one???

Welcome to the forum. My 2008 M59 did the same thing, the speedo often wouldn't work until I'd driven for a bit, then put the brakes on! I'm not certain about the later B9, but on mine it was the connector from the speed sensor which is just by where the driver's side driveshaft goes into the gearbox.
The aircon pipes were in the way, making it really awkward to get the connector off, so I wiggled the connector a few times and sprayed it with contact cleaner which did the trick.

Awesome thanks for that .. today it decided to work for a bit and then completely stopped working PLUS the odometer froze but when you stop and turn the key off and then on it flashes on the correct mileage but then reverts to the "frozen" reading. Thanks for the location I'll take a look tomorrow (it's dark here in Australia now!!!

Ok any hints on where to spot the sensor .. I found one new one on eBay and it's a white plastic thingy and the only plastic fitting I see is bolted to the bulkhead near the brake fluid tank .. Is the sensor above below and behind or to the front of the driveshaft .. I wiggled some cables and the speedo worked but stopped after an hour or so!! The driver shaft side has just the oil sump under the block .. most of the gearbox bits seem to be near the passenger driveshaft side??

Here's the video I used to find the speedo drive on my M59 1.6HDi , I'm not sure if this is the same gearbox used on the B9 tho.

According to Haynes for the 08-16 reg models "The speedometer receives vehicle speed data from the engine management ECM, which is supplied by the wheel speed sensors and the ABS ECM."
B9 (2016) 1.6 BlueHDi 100 Multispace XTR = Mine;   B9 (2013) Enterprise 1.6 HDi Van = Hers.

The wheel abs sensors plug into a hole in the hub behind the brake disc on the front. The rear is similar. The front wheel bearings are the magnetic stripe kind and thats what the sensor picks up. On the rears, the magnetic bearings are built into the brake disc centres.

There are no reluctor rings of course, as the bearings do the job instead. The abs sensors are held in with a bolt each. You can see them with the wheel off.

Hmm mine is a 2009 but only the 1.4 motor I cannot see any sensors on the hub at all so I'm assuming it has the little sensor above the driveshaft.
