I have a double DIN headunit in my 2011 multispace that supports a reversing camera.
Has anyone else retrofitted a reversing camera, i am wondering where is the best place to put it?
There are basically 4 options
- 3rd brake light units. None seem to come with the nozzle for the rear screen wash, an issue on the multispace
- number plate holder brackets. These place the camera above the plate, does that interfere with the grab handle, and it might require drilling a hole in the bootlid.
- There are some options that replace one number plate light cover and still have an LED light but will be offset to one side.
- Drill a hole on the boot lid grab handle, offset to the left.
With the last 2 options the camera will not be centralised but offset to the left, does this cause any issues?
Hi,
I've used a 180 degree view camera in the location shown on the photo. It gives me bumper edge to edge coverage and has guide lines which are red at about 30cm distance from whatever I'm about to hit!
I can't remember which model it was but it wasn't expensive. Connects to a monitor at the front.
Works well in that position, but I'm sure you'll get other opinions.
Good luck with wherever you drill!

I should have mentioned it is for the multispace which has a slightly different layout to the back than the van with its split opening doors.
However i bought a kenwood camera to fit the head-unit, kenwood themselves say that the camera being slightly off to one side should not cause too much of an issue as a lot of manufacturers fit them in that way.

I will post back when the camera is installed.
Just a thought, there are a number of options appearing on eB@y now, including an upper brake light substitute, which has a camera integrated into the lens. That would save any drilling and wouldn't be "un-doable" if you change your mind.
Good look whatever you decide.

The 3rd brake lights seem a good idea. Although most seem to look like a square block has been glued onto the light. Also i cant see any with a washer jet for a multispace it gets used quite a bit.
I have it installed, along the grab handle bar, hard to tell there is a camera there at all. And the offset placement does not reduce the effectiveness of the camera. Still very handy for lining up a tow bar in the way no parking sensor would work.

Can you tell the what camera you have fitted. I have the Kenwood DMX125DAB but the only camera for this that i can see is the KENWOOD CMOS-130 UNIVERSAL INCAR REAR VIEW REVERSING CAMERA. Get a bit suspicious with the 'universal'
You should be able to fit any camera that outputs composite video (yellow plug) with PAL format (not NTSC as that is a US spec) and it should just work mate.

Thanks for the reply, when i get the camera i will stick with the Kenwood i think, should be no probs then.
As above yep any camera with a composite output will work.
I fitted the Kenwood CMOS-230 and it goes into a DMX8019DABS headunit. One thing to note about the headunit is that its power output wires for the camera put out 6v, and the CMOS-230 needs 12v.
The back of the cigarette lighter was used to get an ignition switched source of 12v. The image quality seems to be quite good. It is universal but quite easy to fit it discreetly.
