Identifying correct clutch cable
#1
The clutch on my newly acquired 2002 1.4 petrol is very heavy and "jerky" so I want to try a new cable to see if that eases the problem.
However on  looking at eBay I see there are various types so how do I identify the correct item without taking the old one off the car first?
Thanks.

Try your VIN number in http://www.catcar.info and drill down to clutch, then look at the diagram and parts list, the number on the left is the part number of the item.

The part numbers are links but lead nowhere, its just a site for diagrams and part numbers. You need to then put the part number into a Google search to locate a replacement. You may need to select English language at the top right of the site (catcar) as it's normally in Russian but it is very good if it recognises your VIN.

Watch for entering letter O as zeros etc to ensure you type the VIN correctly.

The cable is a likely culprit as it's all very light and smooth with a new cable.
The gearbox end is easy to get at - take the battery out, along with tray and it's all there. The pedal end is not so easy - a clip holds the cable end in place and you can, if you contort to a degree, get the clip off. This allows the cable to be drawn back into the engine , once a couple of clips in the engine bay area have been released.
It's not so easy getting the pedal end of the cable, along with clip, back in place, but the gearbox end makes up for it! If you can do it all without cursing you'll have done well.
2002 is a bit of a changeover year, and the gearbox end of the cable is worth looking at closely before you order.

I struggled to attach the pedal end of a new cable to a friends Xnatia so left it overnight. Next day friend said they had got a neighbour to sort it out as he knew the problem. He simply cut the head off the pedal bolt and pulled it out so pedal could then removed and new cable easily fitted. New bolt the other way round then was used. Seems Citroen fitted the original bolt in such a way there is no way to remove unless you cut off the head and withdraw via the nut ! Is the Berlingo the same ?

Don't have V5C as only just bought the car so will check VIN tomorrow as too dark now.

its quite easy on a Berlingo , dont need to cut bolts or anything , push the head of the inner cable through the hole in the bulkhead and pop it into the pedal catch.

No trace on search with VIN :Sad  (triple checked I'd entered the right number)

You're not alone. I've been meaning to post a query about this but am waiting until I can check the VIN with Diagbox (just to be sure the VIN plate isn't wrong). Catcar and some other websites don't recognise my VIN; some other sites such as AutoDNA do - or do they? Are they just generating generic data whilst ignoring the last few digits of VINs?

In the end send reg and VIN to a dealer on eBay who told me the correct item to order. Fingers crossed they are right !

For a cross check, send the VIN and reg to Mike at Endon Services as per my other email, I know he's a Citroen parts dealer so if the numbers match, bingo. Or Ber-lingo..

Better to be sure before you start stripping the old one out. Oh and I got caught out by the dastardly Xantia clutch pedal clip...nightmare. I'd no way of cutting the bolt off and you're right, they fit the pedal bolt on such a way it can't be removed as other things are in the way. Mine was stuck in a Tesco car park for weeks. I got the clip on eventually with a lot of swearing and contortionist type stuff by removing the driver's seat and lying upside down with my head under the dash.
