Mk 2 or Mk 3: which do you prefer?
#11
I went to look at a mk3 at my local dealer a while ago. The only one they had was parked outside and the salesman couldn't find the keys. I was welcome to go and look through the windows though Rolleyes

For me, the decisions that made me go for a mk2 were were mostly financial.

I didn't want something as big (or relatively sophisticated) as the mk3. The mk2 already has as much space as I am going to need and so was big enough for what I wanted. The main reason though was the cost of a mk 3 and the prospect of losing £1000s a year in depreciation. My mk2 was £4500 with 36000 miles and in great condition. I figure that if I keep it for 3 years I will lose £2-3000 at the most. Three years depreciation on a mk3 is likely to be around three times this amount.

I do appreciate that the mk3 is probably better in most respects, but I just couldn't see past the numbers.

I agree the numbers dont stack up for buying a mk 3. This country is a rip off as I keep saying...... I try not to think of the depreciation on it. Just enjoy.

It's not such a rip off when buying second hand cars though. I just had a quick look on Citroen's French site at used prices. My car in the UK £4500, identical one in France, the equivalent of £6400

Well in theory with us all being happy Europeans together, we should be able to buy a new left hand drive one here in the UK.....

I'm new here but am taking delivery of my third Berlingo this weekend. My brother-in-law first introduced me to them back in 2002 when he came to visit in his Mark 1. I've always had a bit of back pain, sometimes a little, sometimes worse. I was looking for a car I could get into and drive comfortably, having had a low-slung Volvo V40 for some years. He let me try the Berlingo and I was instantly taken with it. I bought my first one the next month (1.8 forte petrol). In the three years I had that car (2 years old when new), 3 years my ownership the only trouble I had with it was a day of over-heating. A new thermostat cost £4 and was changed in around 10 minutes. That was the only 'trouble' I had with that car and so decided to stay with the model when I replaced it for a newer version in 2005. My second was the Desire model, ordered with the modutop and had the 2.0 HDi diesel engine. I can honestly say it was the best car I've ever owned (and I rue the day I traded it in for a Shogun).
I was relieved and very happy last weekend when I again signed on for my third Berlingo, this one a 1.6i 16V Desire in metallic grey. But I made a conscious decision to stay with the Mark 2, rather than a Mark 3.

My step-son, his wife and new baby turned up in a Mark 3 he'd borrowed this Christmas. Having always laughed at my Berlingos he got out of the car singing their praises and said he wouldn't mind one himself! How the tune changes!
Over the week he was here, I had a good look around the Mark 3 and came to the conclusions there were many things Citroen had changed for the worse! Firstly, they'd moved the front fog lamps up and out onto the corners of the bumpers - precisely where you're going to knock them if you rub something in the car park. This could only be to make more cash on spares as fog lamp fittings are generally dearer that touch-up sticks.
The exterior door rail is now big and highly visible across the back quarter of the car - just like the Renault Kangoo and Peugeot Partner. This is also a retrograde step in my opinion as the rail was hidden below the rear window in the Mark 2.
Also the sliding door top-rail now hangs down obscuring the entry - and I worry that my elderly parents might hit their head on it when entering!
Lastly, and not least - where's the modutop?! The modutop, I reckon, was one of the greatest innovations to the family car in history! Somewhere for the kids to keep their video players, games consoles and DVDs - keeping the car tidy. Somewhere for them to plug those things into thereby preventing wandering leads around the car. 3 ventilation fittings individual rear seat passengers could point down to their faces. And that lovely rear locker that stows away the gas cooker, cups, tea, water and kettle so neatly - so that brew-up is always there no matter where you are!
Without the modutop I simply couldn't even consider the Mark 3.

When I contacted dealers to find my new van I had a hard time finding a late-reg Mark 2 to the spec I wanted. Dealers were telling me that people were hanging on to their Mark 2s - my local dealer said he hadn't had one in since last summer!

I think the mark 2 is going to become very sought-after and in time, will join the ranks of the VW transporter, the beetle, the 2CV and the Morris Minor. They are fun, practical, reliable, cheap and have that something special. IMHO, Citroen have done themselves a disservice by speccing them up and raising that price. If I could have bought a brand new Mark 2 then that's what I'd have chosen. If you've had one, then you'll understand.

Just my thoughts!

Post scipt..!

I just checked the Citroen site and I'm pleased to see that the modutop IS still on option for the Mark 3.

(However, a Mark 3 to the spec of the Mark 2 I'm buying costs £17,161 v £5,000 !!!)

I agree the modutop is retro, funky and so very practicable, glad my mk 3 has one.

Good right up Andy,I reckon a well specced Mk2 with full electric sunroof will be very sought after.

yes modutop is nice but electric sunroof is worth having. Shame they dont do them now. Maybe mk 4 might?
