Engine fault warning triangle

Hi and thanks for adding me to your forum. Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere but after searching I couldn’t find anything related to my problem.
I have a 2013 1.6 HDI with around 93k mileage. Today its started bringing on the warning triangle (solid not flashing) 25 seconds after turning the ignition on along with the words  ‘engine fault’  on the central display. This happens regardless of if the engine is started or not. The ‘engine’ symbol however isn’t illuminated. And if I plug in my OBD reader no engine faults are found. I’ve reset the service mileage just in case but no change. Any ideas as what is causing this especially as the engine doesn’t need to be started to give the warning. Is there a cam belt mileage warning? 
For the initial 25 seconds the engine runs and revs normally but then goes into ‘limp home’ mode limiting it to 3.5k rpm and limited power. Thanks in advance...

I had the same indication when I had a major coolant leak (core plug popped out of the EGR Cooler), I drove the vehicle a very few miles on limp home to my sons house from where it was recovered. I remember also that during this the tyre pressure warnings came on. All the lights were sorted when I got the car back from the dealer.

Hi thanks for the reply but unfortunately the coolant level is normal (as is the oil) as I understand it the triangle is more a service indicator and as the engine management light isn’t on I’m baffled as to why the central display say engine fault! I’m borrowing a professional OBD reader from a garage so hopefully that will shed some light on things.

This warning covers a whole range of issues and is quite honestly a pain in the arse. Without knowing any fault codes it’s impossible to give you any more information. Generally these warnings are to do with general engine and emissions system functionality. I would get it looked at by a garage ASAP and ask for the fault codes. Get them listed on here and someone will be able to provide further info.

I have a 2016 ad blue model which has 307,000 miles on it. In my experience I have only ever had this light on when I have had issues with the emissions system. By that I mean DPF, Additive level and/or Pump and NOx Sensors.

Thanks, it looks like it may end up with a trip to the garage! I have a couple of code readers but as the ‘check engine’ light isn’t on there isn’t any engine ECU codes stored. If I unplug a sensor on the engine the ‘check engine’ light comes on and the relevant code is stored so I know my readers are working. I’m picking up a bit of kit lunch time that hopefully will give me more insight as it’s supposed to read airbag, abs, emissions and lots more. I’ll post back if I have any luck...

Well I now have a couple of fault codes F017 and F066 they appear to be both BSI and related to diesel additive system and battery charge status system. The car doesn’t have an additive bottle that I know of so not really any further forward at the moment!

I think you will find that you do have an additive system with bottle that normally lasts for 100k then needs to be changed. The reservoir is attached to the right hand side of the fuel tank. This is not the Adblue system that you top up through a filler behind the fuel cap cover but I can't remember the name of the fluid - something like 'elloy'.

I don’t think it’s low on fluid as I’m sure it would give some kind of low fluid warning and not just go into limp mode? The diagnostic reader code says ‘absence of communication with the diesel additive pump’? I can’t believe the pump has its own ecu and canbus connection or does it? is the controller in the car somewhere or integrated into the pump housing?
