Berlingo 1.4 petrol died last night
#1
Hi all,
Had big problems with my van last night, While parked with the engine running I decided to change the radio unit back to the original tape player as the aftermarket one would not store stations or settings.
Problems started from there,
The wipers came on by itself so I turned the engine off to check, would not work on the switch. then the radio display went dim, all external light would not turn on and the engine would not start, It would turn over fine but not start.
Central locking was also disabled, nothing on the fob button.
I could see on the radio display that it said eco mode very faint.
The only things that were working were the hazard lights and the internal lights.
Like the ECU had lost its memory,
Had to call the recovery truck!
Has anyone had this issue before, and is it fixable.
Thanks.

I've been holding back because I know that others here are far more clued up on this, but you may be in need of essential info fast.

As a short-term emergency fix, try putting the aftermarket unit back in, and cross your fingers. Hopefully, all will be well (except for your original issue of course).

What I know is only what others have posted on this forum before, so do a search for more info.

The standard PSA radio is not just a radio - it is part of the van's central nervous system and a major link in the VANBUS network (which complements the more familiar canbus). Most people encounter these problems when installing an aftermarket unit, but in your case it seems the previous owner overcame them and now you're getting them when trying to put a PSA unit back in. But it's the same problem.

Speaking basically, there are different types of standard PSA radios, and the van's ECU needs to know which one has been installed. This is done using software called Diagbox and an interface cable called Lexia. With the program on a laptop and the laptop plugged into your OBD port, it is possible to change the radio for another PSA one in the ECU's settings, but if you don't do this and only physically change the radio, the ECU throws a major wobbly as you have found out.

Changing the radio to (and also therefore, I suppose, from) an after-market radio is even more complicated.

As I understand it, the PSA radios also control the multifunction display (the one on top of the dash above the radio), not least to make it display the radio station etc. Aftermarket radios cannot do this, plus they also cannot work with the PSA steering wheel audio stalk (if you have one). Some or all of these problems can be resolved by adding in special wiring harnesses with gizmos in then designed to solve these problems.

But as I said, others will clarify and correct this.

Another recent thread may give a little more insight into this even though it deals with the B9 - the cables are mentioned in posts #4 and #5 etc.:

https://www.berlingoforum.com/thread-20122.html

So, assuming that your previous aftermarket unit has been installed in a way to get round the above issues,  reinstalling a stock PSA radio may also involve corrective surgery to the wiring too!

Before you go about getting Diagbox and Lexia, do a thorough search on these terms in this forum - it is a nightmare path to take, though the rewards can be rich (or at least I'm hoping so!).

Take the radio out turn everything off and remove the key, let the system go to sleep say 3 minutes sometimes you can hear a faint click from the bsi unit fuse box by your right knee. Then dissconnect the battery for ten minutes. Then reconnect the battery and hopefully things will have reset.
Are we there yet????? Huh

Thanks for the info Rasputin,
Should have said that when I bought the van it had the original radio fitted, It was me that changed for an aftermarket one as I needed a cd Player, (tape deck in 2006!!!). I started playing with it as I had no radio reception but replacing the din connector on the antenna cable sorted that.
So I guess that the ECU and wiring would be all standard then?

If you mean do the radio and ECU talk to each other and other crucial components via canbus, then yes; although PSA cars also have a second similar bus called vanbus which handles some stuff whilst the canbus does other stuff. In essence, though, sort of the same thing.

Other key items sharing the vanbus with the radio are the instrument cluster and steering column stalks (= your lights/wipers/ignition issues).

So instead of the wiper switch directly controlling the wiper motor, it instead sends a digital request to the ECU which in turn sends out instructions to the wiper motor.

(scroll down to the radio connector diagram and read from there).

I think your problem might have been caused, or was at least made much worse, by doing the swap with power on - it would be a bit like swapping parts of a PC whilst it was running programs.

I repeat I am no expert on this by any means, but my intuition tells me that either returning your setup to how it should be with the power off (follow Tomcat3's advice carefully) will make the ECU happy again, OR you blew its brains out and you have a much more serious problem on your hands.

1. Try Tomcat3's advice without changing the radios at all. Might work.
2. Try Tomcat3's advice and swap the radios whilst the ECU is unconscious. Also might work.

If neither works, I'd imagine that there are ways to test an ECU; others will know. Beyond me completely.

Well, finally managed to log back onto the site.
I thought i would update you all on the van fault on post 1.
I feel pretty stupid as al it was ,was a 20amp dash fuse had blown. had to put it on a computer though as all coms with the ecu had gone, old radio fitted back in and working.
Lucky or what.

Yes, lucky indeed!

Record all your CDs as MP3 files on your computer, and then get one of those MP3 players which plug into a cigar lighter socket and transmit their audio as a low-power FM signal, which you can tune your radio into.

Or, record all your CDs onto cassette tapes!
