Speed limiter
#1
I’ve recently purchased my berlingo van. I recon it’s got a limiter on it at 70mph
As it stops increasing at that point quite sharply and sits there with foot to floor.
I have a tuning company local to me and the said they can remove the limiter
But they couldn’t once the plugged it in.
They say there might be a wiring fault!
A mechanic friend said it needs dealer software to take the limiter off not aftermarket diagnostic through sounds expensive! Anyone else had this issue?
I don’t want or need to go much faster but there are too many people out there sitting at 68mph that don’t want to be over taken by a van so speed up so I can’t get passed. Then I end up stranded in the outside lane with an impatient driver behind.

Hi - sounds like it may be a preset in the ECU spec'd from the factory (https://www.berlingoforum.com/thread-19148-page-2.html) that thread discusses it.

We had a Master van with a similar ECU based limiter (55 mph in 5th and 65mph in 6th) and it was a complete and utter pain on the motorway until the day we sold it - mind you it had 208,000 miles on it and never missed a beat so maybe there's something in the idea :-)

I had a limiter on my berlingo van.

kicked in at 68mph just like you said.

Got mine removed foc in the end by the the supplying dealer..

only took about 10 mins to do.

Most common on ex lease vehicles. Ex British gas etc, so it may as Graeme says, have been built that way from new. You can buy an unlocked ECU from HDi Tuning for £150 which will not have a limiter, and can even get a remapped one from them for £180 so might be cheaper than getting Citroen to reflash the ECU with new software.

That’s a lot of useful info guys
Thanks for your help
I think I will go down the hdi tuning route as I like the sound of the remapped ecu.
Cheers.

Just a word of of warning
I purchased a new ecu from hdi tuning unlocked as they call it and it didn’t solve the problem.
After emailing them they told me there where 2 other places in the van that the limiter can be found other than the ecu, and because I went for the 120hp version they will not take it back as apparently it been customised to me!!!!
It’s hardly got my name engraved on it!
So I thought F it!
I contacted Citroen ready to take a hit!
£49+vat they quoted to remove the limiter.
Wish I’d just called them in the first place.

Sorry to hear that mate, they told me it would remove the limiter if it was programmed into the ECU as the new one wouldn't have a limiter...I asked when I emailed them about my ECU. That's why I suggested that route.

So if you already got the remapped one, and get rid of the limiter at Citroen, you'll have the best of both worlds, no? Did they say where else they thought the limiter could be then?

And I'd say you still have the right under the Distance Selling Act to return the item as it is not a software package but a physical item, within the 14 day cooling off period.

I didn’t notice any difference in performance when I put the 120 ecu in
I’ve had a diognostic done by my mate who plugged in his computer to see if there was anything he could do with the limiter.
But couldn’t
He checked for fault codes and nothing came up so all good.
Hdi tuning said a general rule was a faulty air mass sensor if no extra power felt.
Don’t want to start chasing for others parts.

This is what hdi tuning said “ Hi Steve,

The speed limiter is in 3 places, you need diagbox or lexia to turn it off.
The speed limiter is off in the ECU I sent you, but there is also a speed limit in 2 menus within the BSI.

If you find someone with Lexia or Diagbox you can switch it off.

The ECU was made to order for you and there is no fault with it so it is not refundable, you just need to turn off your speed limiter.”

I’ll see What I can about a refund again as I think I have a right to send it back
It’s hardly customised to me like he states.
And I’ve had a map put on my navara and it didn’t take long at all once file was written so I’m sure he could have it back to stock in no time.

Easy way to prove if your MAF is buggered, is just unplug it and go for a drive. It will use the default map for airflow. Probably will chuck an EML on but it should pull through the rev range pretty well.

Is this speed limit different in every gear by any chance? I.e its actually at a certain rpm rather than actual road speed that it stops pulling? A proper limiter should hold you to a speed, same speed no matter which gear you're in as long as it can be reached or exceeded in that gear, so 70 in 4th and 70 in 5th. Not 55 in 4th and 70 in 5th. That sounds like the MAF is not reading above a certain value. Once it hits the "top", I expect no more fuel will be injected so no more rpm....

Same rpm / different gear = different speed.

The speed limit is at 70 whatever gear so I can do 70 in 4th.
