Can I ask why it needs replacing, are you having starting problems ?

Have you tested it ?

By the way hello and welcome to the Forum.

It is behind the nearside headlamp

On my M59 it was down in a gap behind the passenger headlight, bolted to the vertical metal panel that separates the headlight area from the engine bay, that was on a 1.6 HDi, not sure if it's the same. I did have a 1.9 for a while but never had to find that relay on it.

Yes, i think so. It doesn't click after it goes out on the dashboard, so i was told the relay was to blame -so i bought a relay and glow plugs. I know the glowj plugs can snap so i have a mechanic arranged but i need to get it to him. I've also bought some easy start and would like to know where to spray it without putting the block in orbit! I've looked for this relay and i must be blind because i can't see it! Thank you for replying.

If you have a couple of crocodile clips you should be able to hot-wire a couple of the accessible glow plugs direct to the battery - may have the odd spark when you connect. 20 seconds or so and the engine may well start on the warmed up plugs and the unheated cylinders will eventually chime in. May have some smoke in the meantime. If it almost starts then warm the plugs again, rather than cranking over further.
Good luck!

Connect a 12V bulb with wires between the glow plug top connector and earth, then turn the ignition on and see if it lights up. The plugs only come on below certain temperature levels but once started they come on for a bit, called post-glow, to help with emissions and warm up running.

You wouldn't hear an engine bay relay from the driver's seat. But, it's also a solid state relay so it doesn't make a sound anyway.

What does the car actually do when you try and start it. Btw easy start is sprayed into the intake so the engine can burn it in the cylinders. Takes two people, one to spray and one to crank the engine.

Shouldn't be sprayed through the air filter so you would have to open the airbox first and spray down it's throat.

If its only hard to start first thing it could also be the exhaust valve gap close up on high mileage motors making it hard to start.
Are we there yet????? Huh

You havent had the fuel filter changed have you?

We chased bad starting first thing after ot had been stood a couple of days, it turned out that air was getting in at the top of the fuel filter. A new clamping ring fixed it. We have had a couple of high mileage 1.9s drom new and have not had a problem with the exhaust valve gap closing up.

I've had hard starts due to this - air gets in the fuel feed from the tank somewhere at the top of the engine, diesel gradually trickles back into the tank overnight and you get the problem. If it is a very slow ingress of air then the car will then start normally for several hours so the tendency is to blame something else. Worth following the pipes back from the filter to see if there's an obvious rub point. The manual 'bulb' for priming the filter should also be hard to pump - if its really squishy (I know technical terms again - sorry) then you may have air getting in.

Our 1.6 HDi Berlingo never had a working relay for the glowplugs and never had a hard start. I did swap the one in the Mini as it was easy to access (it's right in front of you when you open the bonnet so no digging around in the dark trying to spot it) but then found that two out of the four glowplugs were u/s so just put the old relay back in - again it always starts fine. I may be losing on the mpg but I'd rather not play around trying to get the old plugs out - done it once and I really didn't think it was worth the hassle, mess and angst - though if you are lucky yours may just slide out like a chocolatier's cash drawer this time of year.
