[Engine] My new van of problems
#1
I brought 06 1.9 diesel berlingo 4 days ago since then I’ve had two different warning lights and it’s having trouble starting. The women I brought it from hasn’t done much in the ways of services and also sold it to me pretty low on diesel, better yet not to my knowledge it had no oil! So come the next day after half a tank top up it’s turning over but dies after a couple seconds, I’ve tried to hold revs when I get it going just in case it’s just a bit to cold but clunks out at about 1500. I’m pretty broke but need her running any thought because I’m stumped.  I should also note coolant has also been topped up. Big Grin

What warning lights ?? are they still on ?

Did it test drive ok ?

With the fluids now at a safe level I'd ensure the fuel filter is changed ( cheap / easy ) and look at / shake out the air filter .. money constraints complied with.

Beyond that see how it pans out.

Cheers, Geoff.

When I put the key in a turn it I get a beeping and the stop light flashes when it’s turned over, there’s an oil leak quite clearly across the top of the engine I think it’s a cam seal? But was told it shouldn’t be the cause. Oils been topped up coolant and I’m not sure how to test the break fluid I’m new to owning a van unfortunately. The test drive went fine no beeping no lights on the dash and turned over just fine considering there was no oil in it  Sad  Only thing I was concerned about was the clutch being a bit stiff toward the bottom. Many thanks for the reply

It could be a blocked Cat(catalytic converter).
One way to test it is to disconnect the exhaust downpipe from the manifold and try running it then.

Honestly, the 1.9 is nearly bomb proof. It takes dedication and a massive amount of stupid to destroy one.

If I guessed that the engine was warm already when you came to test drive it, would I be far off the mark?

Top up the brake fluid it needs to be on or just above the max they are quite temperamental if the fluid is the slightest bit low. Even worse if parked on a slope.
Are we there yet????? Huh

I’ve got someone local to come take a look for me tomorrow so i will have a chat with them about that see if he can check off the suggestions and it being nearly bomb proof does give me a bit of confidence. The engine had already been turned over by the time I had gotten there I don’t think she parked it outside her house. Appreciate the comments feeling a bit stuck at the moment aha

might be worth checking for water in the bsi it lives below and to the right of the steering wheel. we have had a bit of rain.

Thanks to all the responses it’s had no troubles the last couple of days and the beeping and stopped on it’s own ? I’ve got it booked in for a proper look over everything and a service so I’m hoping that’ll bring to light anything major. I’m begging to think that when I had a friend top up the fluids he may have over done it on the oil because once it’s turned over and you get a nice smell of burning oil go through the van it’s runs a treat.
