Pulsing engine when cold
#41
Hey, yes it was a faulty EGR valve I believe. Attached a blanking plate to test it and it ran like a Swiss watch. Bought a replacement valve and hopefully that’ll cure it. Could leave the plate in but don’t want to affect emissions. Will just keep on top of it to keep it clean.

I also checked my injectors for tightness after I knew it was the EGR, 3 of the 4 were loose(ish) so I tightened them up. Seems a common problem.

As for additive, Lucas injector cleaner is the best one I know of, my thoughts are they can’t hurt even if they aren’t  the miracle cure they advertise. The reviews for Lucas were pretty incredible though that’s why I gave it a punt. Hope that helps.

They only test diesels visually for smoke. As I've learned myself, the EGR blank improves running and there is no emissions fail. A few years ago, I thought like you that it would fail, but it doesn't make a jot of difference to the mot.

Good to know that blanking the EGR cured the problem!

Keeping on top of to keep it clean won't stop the inherent hesitation that the EGR causes at low RPM /speed, or stop the inlet manifold filling up with sooty sticky deposits though.

An egr blank is on the to do list

It’s going to have to wait until the garage have had a look at the car and we have better weather and I’ve more time.
