True mate. Turbine or bearings could be damaged.

If the turbine should rotate freely with your finger then it's knackered as it is stuck solid and won't rotate.  I wanted to try and start the vehicle with the inlet pipe off the turbo to see if the vane spins, but the vehicle immediately stalls.

It should spin freely mate. Sounds like your turbo is cooked. Ouch. If you take the output tube off, and the MAF is still connected, it reads zero airflow so no fuel pressure is generated. It won't run like that.

To do the test you were trying, you need to disconnect the MAF with the ignition off, then start it with no turbo air pipe connected.

Anyway a jammed turbine is toast already bud. You're lucky the engine didn't eat the remains.

I'll disconnect the MAF and try as you suggest, but I couldn't turn it with my figures.

Really appreciate your help with my questions ?

Yeah there's not much point, the central bearing carrying the shaft for both hot and cold turbines will be cooked and jammed. The noise you heard would be the 40,000 rpm blades stopping against the casing as the bearing let go. They do suffer from oil contamination in the feed pipe from carbon deposits in the oil. Well done to JJ9 for first thinking of that.

Not much consolation to you now, you'll need a new turbo, feed pipe and banjo union, oil change, filter and also the sump and pickup pipe cleaned or preferably replaced. (Pickup pipe / strainer)

Don't despair, it is not a difficult job altogether. It took me 4 days with all the mentioned components by Zion, including the oil sump as well (1/5 here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7S0qDBo314). Overall if you do it yourself, it costs ~£300, garage will be considerably more.

It may be slightly different 1.6HDi engine as compared to yours, but it should be fairly the same.

Here we are at post #22 and you have just found this out now. . . . you could have know by post #5 !

Anyway, in this case you have been lucky, the shaft could have went altogether allowing pressurised oil into the inlet side of the turbo resulting in an engine run away.

Well as you know I like to apply the simplest most logical tests first, a quick look at the turbo compressor would have confirmed the thinking.
Simple tests are often the best, this is something worth bearing in mind before reaching for fancy electronic fault finding equipment.

In my defence I thought I could spin the turbine vane yesterday when I tried so I wasn't completely sure. Running multiple checks is not a bad thing as it means you don't make costly mistakes replacing parts that have not failed.

Multiple checks are fine if performed in the correct order.
