[Engine] Head gasket or not?
#21
Thermostat/housing has been replaced. I would have thought the pressure test the garage did when I suspected the head gasket would have shown something up?

I would like to get to the bottom of it as otherwise the van seems OK for what I need.

If it was me, I'd rather check myself and know for sure. They could have left something not right or they missed a fault. It's pretty easy to do the test yourself.

The saga continues...

Dropped the van off at the garage near work this morning, soon had a phone call... 'head gasket's gone'. I told them to get on with it. No idea how the other garage didn't pick it up but maybe soon I'll have a useable van.

It did have all the classic signs eh. Time to avoid the other lot!

The garage rang this morning, the head has gone off to be skimmed. They are also going to change the manky radiator and refit it properly with the right brackets (it looks like the van has had front end damage in the past). Not a cheap fix but at least I'll know it's all done and still cheaper than scrapping it or selling it cheap with a known fault and buying another 'unknown quantity'

The good news was that the other shower did actually change the cambelt which they charged me for...

I got the van back today, delayed because the first replacement rad leaked and the second one arrived damaged. So I now have:

Head skimmed
New head gasket
New head bolts
New injector seals
New glow plugs
New radiator and fixings
New heatshield
New water pipe

...and a lighter wallet! But I'm a happy bunny, I actually had to turn the heater down on the way home...

Now that's sorted there are a couple of cosmetic bits I think I'll tackle next.

Thumbs Up
Good to hear that it's fixed and working with lots of heat from the heater.  Smile

You have a working heater?

dang...

Mine only runs at full tilt right now, and that really doesn't work with the -15C weather here...
(Not going to swap the resistor until spring. )
Now, if only the heated seats worked it wouldn't have been so bad...

Until I fixed my heater on my 2002 1.4 I had 2 heated seat covers from Aldi - about a tenner each - my wife and I took turns to plug them in to the cigarette lighter - so also took turns in finding out what hypothermia feels like.  Big Grin
