A little problem....
#1
...has cropped up on our MS.  It hasn't been used for about 6 weeks and I thought I had better take it out for a little bimble to show it that it was still loved!  Started her up and let her run for about 10 minutes and then drove off down the drive in 1st gear.  "Bother" thought I, "did I lock the front door?".

Now the problem begins.  Went to put her into reverse to back up the drive and could not get the lever to move down into the reverse position (it is a manual box).  Tried to put the lever into 2nd & 4th position but could not get it to fall into any of these slots.  Thought "I'll take it round the block for a short drive to if that frees anything up."  So off I go starting off in 1st gear but could not get any other gear at all, only 1st.  Went round the block in 1st and managed to get her back and drive her nose first up the drive.  Still not able to select 2nd, 4th or reverse.  Clutch works OK as I could move off and de-clutch without a problem.  When sitting on the drive and engine running can select 1st, 3rd and 5th and get the clutch to bite in those gears.

Luckily I have the Citroen Used Vehicle Warranty and Citroen Assist so will be activating those shortly.  Just interested if anyone has an idea as to the problem before I am advised of the fault by the dealer.

The linkages from the g/lever to the g/box used to fall off now and again on my old berlingo , just popped them back on again and carried on.
Could the B9s have the same problem ?

To check it looks like the air pipes hoses etc has to be removed , not as easy as I thought to get to.

Might be possible to get at the gear linkages with the passenger wheel and arch liner off on the B9, it will as BF says, be the ball joints have popped off one side of the shifting cable / rods where they meet a set of levers on the box..

They can just be popped back on with a bit of force but getting to them may be a pain.

Citroen Recovery (aka the RAC) came yesterday afternoon. The chap had a good look including from underneath the car and under the gear lever and also took the battery out to try and get to the linkage in the engine bay but could not reach it without taking out the battery tray but this was outside their remit. So he towed it over to the dealers (as it is under the Citroen Used Car Warranty) to let them deal with it. He was of the impression that all the linkages were sound and that the problem was in the gearbox.

Owing to virus lockdowns, it's only done 1400 miles since I bought it at the end of February!

Actually does sound a bit suss you can get 1, 3 and 5 but not the others. Could be the gearbox selectors but odd to fail at that very moment eh.

Did the gear shift go to 2 and 4 or could it not get to those positions? Even if they didn't work, does it go backwards at the shift or only forwards / neutral (the gear stick not the car etc)

Reason I ask, is you have a cable shift with two cables and several main balljoints. If the gear stick seems stuck from getting to 2 and 4 and reverse, it may be inside the car the ball joint had popped off. If the shift goes there but nothing happens, the gearbox end must be off. This could have fooled the rac man. The shift can feel ok in the car if the engine end is off one of the cables.

The stick would not move down into 2, 4 & R and would not go below the horizontal movement line. It does move across this line and up to 1, 3 & 5.

As you say, very strange that it should happen at that exact moment. There were no crunching or crashing noises whatever. When it first happened (as I tried to go backwards up the drive) it did actually move into the R position but there was no drive. From then onwards no joy at all.

I think it's broken inside the car then mate, not at the gearbox end. The internal shifter is a block assembly, probably some plastic part of it has split or sheared.

When it comes off the gearbox end the shift still goes in but nothing happens as the gearbox end is waving in the air not connected to the heavy bit...

Lets hope so as should be a quick fix. The RAC man did have the trim around the base of the gear lever off and couldn't see anything untoward but he didn't take the whole centre console out though.

Update: The dealers advised that there was a problem with the 'barnacle(???)' on the gear box which needed replacing luckily under the Used Car Warranty. Will be picking it up tomorrow pm so will quiz the service guys as to exactly what the 'barnacle' is and does.

Hmmm barnacle ....I think they have it down as a ship lol. Arrrrr me barnacles......arrrrrr (imagine pirate with eye patch, peg leg and parrot etc - insert additional options here)

Seriously..never heard of a barnacle, could be a Citroen nickname for a part. Interested to see what this is exactly.
