Headlight Malfunction
#1
Question
Hi.

I have a Berlingo B9 2008 HDI 1,6l 90HK

I have a strange problem.  Huh

The Main Head lights turn on when I stop the engine.
When I start the engine, the Main headlights turns off.
And I can not turn them on again by use off light handle in the car.
In the dashboard I see that the symbol for Headlight turns on, and I can switch on and off the parking linght and the Long distance light.
But the Not the Main head lights lights.

I have tried the BSI resett prosedure that I found, without any luck.

- open window and bonnet
- waith 3 min
- Disconnect battery
- Wait 15 sec.
- Connect battery
- Waith 10 sec
- Turn on park lights
- hold close buton on remote for 10 sec.

Any ideas to help me out ??

Odd. Try this, with the engine off and keys out, turn the left switch on the indicator stalk two clicks towards the windscreen - this is main lights and sidelights on. Only the sidelights come on as parking lights at this point.

Next, put the keys in and start the engine, the main lights should now come on as well as sidelights.

Turn off the light switch again, main and sidelights should all go out. Stop the engine and pull out the keys, interior light should come on, no outside lights on. Next time you start the engine first, then turn light switch on the wiper stalk two clicks, all lights should come on.

On the B9 you can leave the lights on, with the engine running and when switching off the engine, they go off with the engine by themselves. They do not come back on until the engine actually starts next time. If you turn them on when the engine is off, they stay on until switched off or the engine had been started again and turned off again. Then they return to off.

A while ago, I had a mate with a similar problem on his Berlingo.
After days of searching and guessing it turned out to be a bad wire about a foot from the engine compartment fuse box!

I had left for the day, but he told me what happened. It was 2 canbus wires (a white and a red) twisted together. They go to the passenger side (here in the UK) engine fusebox. Don't know where they come from!

In the engine bay fairly near to the passenger side (UK) headlight, the wires had gone green about 30cm from a plug which was top left in the fuse box.  He cut and then re-joined the wires, removing the rotten, green bad bit. Worked right away!
Good luck with it!

Good pointer mate! Well worth a check. That's the kind of info you can't buy.

Hi.

Appreciate your answere
These wires has now been checked. No misscoloring or damage on the wires. Also tested them with a Fluke.
Do you know what kind off signal they run ? It does not look like its on the CAN bus ??

Hi. Thanks for the answere.

I have tried this but It just will not work.

You see, the second i connect the bettery, Ibhear a click in the relay module, and the ligts goes on, and stays on untill the engine starts.

The leveler on the left hand side, controling the ligst have no effect on the Main ligts, onely the other ligst, Park, Side, and long distance.

Everything is controlled by the BSI...it sounds like your comm2000 column switching module is misbehaving. Or, the BSI itself. You can try a hard reset on the BSI....

Find the main link marked SH / HS and pull it, wait a full 15 minutes then reinsert it (ignition off) and it will hard reboot the BSI. It may reset some of the BSI option coding but if desperate, and you have DiagBox to code them back, may be worth a shot.

If you have DiagBox anyway, then you can go in and check / live test all of the lighting functions. May even find a fault code or two.

Haynes manual has the wiring diagrams. I'll try to post a scan when I can.

Also could be a faulty control stalk, or water in the BSI...has this just started or always happened since you bought it?

It could be a weird configuration in daylight running light settings too.

Hi Øystein,
I always figure that any twisted pair wiring in the car is CanBus/Data as it helps stop interference. I honestly don't know what signals ought to be there, just that my friend solved his "headlights on" issue by removing the yucky wiring. I'd hoped it would fix yours but these cars always have a few tricks up their sleeves. I still think the problem sounds BSI-related, but I've no more useful ideas at this stage. Be interesting to see what Diagbox "says" about the present lighting and DRL settings.
Good judgement comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgement…
