[Engine] Blanking the egr
#1
Will blanking of the egr valve put up dash warning lights on a 2009 model?

On the B9 it does mate. The ECU checks for EGR flow. A 2009 M59 is different, as it's still the same vehicle as the earlier ones, but the B9 (as we know yours is) is different.

Mind you, being as you're likely still euro 4 spec with no DPF, it may be worth a try. If it did trip the EML, you can always take it out again and the light will go off again as the "fault" no longer exists.

The plate is cheap from eBay and pretty easy to fit.

Cheers Zion
I may give it a try at some point in the future
If I do I’ll report back with my findings.

I would do it as a priority, sooty exhaust gases into an oily inlet manifold can cause nothing but trouble.

How do you solve the problem of the light coming on?
Or do you have to get used to the light being on and refit the egr valve before the mot.

In all honesty I don’t even know where the egr valve is yet as the car is new to me and I’ve not much time to tinker with it at the moment.

I’ve just watched a you tube vid showing egr removal so at least I know where it is and how to remove it now.

Dont take it off, you just slacken the two bolts on the front side where it connects to the engine (oval flange) and slip the plate in, then tighten up.

As Zion has said the light may not come on, on your vehicle as it's an early B9, test it out and let us know.

I can't remember if Zion tried a blanking plate on his 2012 vehicle but I guess he probably did so he speaks with more experience than me on the subject of the later B9's and the light coming on.

If your light does come on personally I would live with it and remove the blank for the MOT, if the light doesn't come on happy days, just leave it in place at MOT time it won't make any difference to any emission tests.

Cheers JJ. I put a blank on the 2009 M59 I had, it ran better than ever and no EML. On the B9, it went into fault for "EGR flow error" so I took it out as the MOT was due and no EML is allowed, but it can be mapped out. Only issue is, on my current van the ECU is an edc17c10 so it can't be mapped from the OBD port. That means sending the ECU away and I've never had the chance.

I have spoken to Steve at HDi Tuning (used to be Pro_Steve on here) and he has a remapped ECU ready to fit, for £200 so I'm swithering over it.

That can be specced for 120hp and no EGR. Might do it yet.

I've seen EGR blanks for the 1.6hdi that has a small hole drilled in the centre, apparently this allows a small amount of EGR flow to keep the EML off, may be the answer for the later engines that object to a full blank.

So go get the drill out  Wink
