[Engine] Injector lining has come out. Game over?
#1
I had a failed turbo and subsequently discovered the black death issue on cylinder 3.  Anyhow, I removed the injector, but it's pulled the sleeve out the engine.

Just wondering whether it's game over now as far as what I can do myself as I don't want to spend a load of cash or time if it requires the head stripping down?

Thanks

From what I can see from a quick look around the sleeve is just a push fit, they are readily available so I think that they just press into place.

You can't be the only person to ever pull the sleeve with the injector so we need some internet reading on this one.

Mini based discussion here links to a 'posh' injector servicing link here  (Posh 'cos he has all the correct tools but there are some nice pictures - it mentions 'special glue').

Consensus in the Mini world is to drift the sleeve in using a bit of wood and gentle hammer tapping after cleaning out the hole. Smear of Loctite instead of special glue. Compare height in block with neighbours either side. Reassembly is then the opposite of disassembly <---- Heh that old porkie. Big Grin

(Mini link above is worth a read - he drills out a stuck injector in situ and then clears the swarf by ..........)

i read an article that mentions using loctite when fitting the sleeve. So it all looks perfectly doable.

So you're not getting out of the job then Wink

How did you get the injector out of the engine, it must have had quite a hold to pull the sleeve out with it.

I'm stubborn, so will persevere until it becomes apparent it's not worth the cost.  I used a span to turn the injector and it started moving slowly and then moved a lot and I though brilliant it's done.  When I pulled the injector out I didn't twig, but when I looked in the hole I thought  Cry

There was Youtube video of getting the sleeve off the injector by using a blow torch to heat it.  Hoping this hasn't knackered the injector, but the carbon effectively liquifies and oozes out and the sleeve can then be removed by hand.

All I can say is that lockdown has one advantage.  I can work at home so don't need the vehicle, otherwise it would be much more stressful.

I also got a brand new Mitsubishi manufactured turbo off ebay for £100, so I thought that given the price of a cartridge and I get the waste gate I bought a whole turbo instead.

I was thinking that a sticky post regarding 'Black Death' would be useful.  I'd never even heard of it until I saw it affecting one of the injectors and hence turbo failure.

Full marks for your persistence, I don't like to be beat either.

I've seen a couple of videos where they removed an injector with a spanner, turning it back and forwards until it came free, it seemed to work ok, unfortunately you got the bad luck with the sleeve coming with it.
Hopefully the injector will be ok after heating it to remove the sleeve, but even if it's not on the scale of things it's a minor concern at this point in your job.

Good score on the new turbo, that will save you a bit of work.

I've seen the leaking injector problem mentioned a few times on forums, but as you say maybe it should be highlighted on the forum as spotting it early would save a lot of problems.

Don't know if you've came across this page in your searches but it gives some good info regarding turbo failure.

I have a similar one and I find it a very interesting read.  If I hadn't been aware of the root cause, I too would have most likely just have refitted a new turbo.  To think that people have had a garage fit a new turbo and for it to fail within 30 miles.  Ouch.

Thanks for the links, they make interesting reading. There's a thread somewhere suggesting that the engine must be really hot before removing the injectors, something like letting it idle for 4 hours IIRC! In that case the heating will probably release the injector from the sleeve. Based on what I've read, all is not lost.
A note re Loctite, I have no experience with using it on the 1.6HDi, but I do know from personal practical experience that the way to release Loctite is by heating the part in question with a blowtorch. As to how hot the engine gets vs a blowtorch, I'm not sure but I'd say you need some heat resistant Loctite, or similar 'glue'.
