Engine swap advice please
#1
Wink
Hi,

I have 3 Berlingos, but only need one.  Shy

Now here's the issue. While all three are 2.0Hdi engines, number 1 has a slight difference. The other two have a sort of mechanical pulley and cable mechanism for the throttle mounted above the engine on the left hand side, while number 1 doesn't have this. I'm assuming number 1 may be a slightly newer model with an electronic module for the throttle.

Can anyone shed some light on this? I want to use number 1 engine in one of the other cars, but will the throttle difference cause me any major issues?

I'm a simple Land Rover guy... take engine out, put new one in... no electronics. I sense I am about to embark on a complicated journey.

Thanks in anticipation,
Marc

You're right. Two have a cable operating the TPS and one has a drive by wire pedal. Just move the bare metal engine, leave the controls as they were in the new car to receive the engine?

There's no difference between the actual engines, only the controls and wiring. Leave it all behind and just use the system found in the car which receives the engine. After all if you need a new sensor or MAF, then you have it already?

The reason I say this, is diesels have no "throttle" but the accelerator control goes to the ECU and it adjusts the injector rate and flow to create rpm. You are only communicating with the ECU from the pedal on the HDi, electronic or with cable and sensor, either way the ECU is doing the job of revving the engine when you press the pedal, no matter what is on the end of it.

It's not like a mechanical rotary distribution pump diesel (land rover?)

So, if you unhook all wiring from the donor engine and just match up all wiring from the dead engine, it will (should) work. Including the injector harness as they should be the same. But, you will have to recode the injectors in the receiving car ECU as they will not match properly.

Or, you have to move the whole lot, ECU, BSI, keys, barrel, locks, wiring harness, accelerator pedal and cable / pulley / tps......

Using DiagBox, you program new injectors in configuration of the ECU, putting in the numbers stamped on the top circular ring of the injector body. No1 is closest to the gearbox. Do that and save configuration. When DiagBox says it's completed, it's ready to use.

you turn off the ignition for some time, 30 seconds I think, then the configuration is carried out. DiagBox will let you know. It can't be easily done without this software. It will likely run without this but may smoke, or just not run perfectly. The numbers on the injectors tell the ECU what the injector calibration settings were from the factory. Pressure, needle lift and flow etc.

You may need to take the ECU & BSI along with the engine, that way you can avoid issues with the injector calibration and maybe some other compatibility issues, although re-coding injectors into the ECU is probably not so difficult. I'm not sure that you would need to take the lock barrel & transponder from the steering column.
If you look at catcar.info , input the VIN from the cars, you will maybe see where the differences are in the throttle linkage part numbers & connections.

It's easy to code Injectors in DiagBox. But if you needed to move everything, the barrel on the new car would not fit the key that's coded to the old BSI for the donor engine. Agreed you can code keys but not used ones. The transponder chip can be coded to only one BSI. If you move the ECU and BSI then you must use the old keys for the donor parts. They will then not fit the locks or the barrel...you could swap the blades over with a bit of hassle. Far easier to code the injectors to the ECU on the receiving vehicle.

Thank you, everyone for the information. I have a pretty clear road map ahead of me now, and now I just need to decide which lucky chassis gets the special treatment, and which ones get binned. Smile
