You are supposed to turn it clockwise a quarter turn and pull upwards.

Didn't work for me so carefully shredded the knob with a craft knife, a bit of heat from a hairdryer helped. If you prise off the marked disc there is a large counterweight screwed down with a phillips screw, once that's gone the rest comes apart in bits and the remains should slide off the white connector.

If you fit a cheapo Chinesey knob you will appreciate why the original had the counterweight. Works fine but doesn't feel as nice.

Sadly not, the counterweight is bigger than the cheapo knob and is an intrinsic part of the original.
If a new genuine one comes up sometime I might consider it but it works OK.

I couldn't find a new genuine one, secondhand is not, as far as I can see, an option as they tend to get destroyed during removal. My replacement was about a fiver from Amazon.
There is a white plastic fitting on the lever, not sure if it is threaded or pinned on. This has flutes angled to enable the quarter turn and pulling off of the knob. Didn't take a pic of it unfortunately but the general consensus is that cutting it off give you a major headache. It's a common thing with contemporary PSA vehicles apparently.

The one I got fitted on the white fluted part perfectly with no slop.

It would appear I was ripped off, I paid just over £5.  Big Grin
