Information gained from here and from a similar C3 owners forum gave me the confidence to attempt this repair and it was successful. The only thing i was nervous about was separating and reconnecting the two boards and i made up a little tool for this which you can see in this video https://youtu.be/kYKrAp5v3RM i hope that might be of use to anyone else with this problem or who might need to separate the boards. If nothing else it does illustrate how much force is required to pop the boards apart.
Just an update on the locking and unlocking relays in the BSI. Replacements are available as at October 2021 from CPC in Preston (a branch of Farnell) via mail order or collection. The reference number is V23076A1001C133. Also known as 1393277-4. They cost £3.50 as at same date. If you find that your vehicle will lock but not unlock, or the other way round, it is likely as not due to the coil on one of these relays going open circuit.
Getting the old relay out is difficult as the are soldered through the board so you need a good solder removal process to remove the solder. I ended up concentrating on one pin at a time and twistng a small screwdriver between the board and the relay cover to very gradually extract each pin in turn. It was a laborious process but got there eventually. The pins on the new relay are also quite beefy so you need to remove ALL the solder from the board before inserting the new relay. In my case I used a number of small drills (in my fingers) to gradually increase the hole diameter.
