If I can find an ECU with matching part numbers, and it's unlocked (immobiliser disabled) will it be a plug and play replacement? I don't really care about losing the immobiliser.

So far as I understand, yes.
HDI Tuning will be able to advise on that.
Maybe he can repair your old one?

Yes, as CC says a replacement engine ECU that's been de-immobilised and matches yours in every way, can be fitted.

There are no real suppliers, and if yours wasn't so badly damaged then it could have been repaired at a few places, but it's likely the pads are damaged from pulling the chip legs off. Never know though, BBA Reman and others are out there - try googling "ecu repair"

The keys are matched to the BSI and the BSI is matched to the ECU. You can't code a used key from one vehicle to another one, only new keys can be programmed. Once programmed, the transponder chip is "blown" from being re-coded to another car.

When you try to start the car, the engine ECU asks the BSI if the current key is authorised, if not, no start authorisation is given. If it is recognised, then the engine can be started.

You can get virginised BSI units and then recode them to the ECU using DIagBox / Lexia but not much can be done to the ECU so a used one is useless unless it's had the software removed that asks for key authorisation, some companies can do that. A replacement would have to be exact in every number on the label or there is no guarantee it will work at all, your car could have different sensors fitted, different functions from new as options, it will have different coded injectors, there's a whole raft of stuff to be matched up before it will work properly.

That's why a matching set of BSI, Engine ECU and Keys (again matching your ECU and BSI for numbers and functionality) need to be moved over for success when using used parts - because the key transponders need to go too, and then the blades will be different from your locks (doors and ignition) - but you can't code your old keys to the replacement BSI....

Remember all this stuff came into being to stop little TWOC'er idiots from stealing people's hard earned motors.

Great info, thanks everyone.
Just to clarify, I think my two options are 1) get an ECU with matching part numbers and the immobiiser disabled. 2) get an ECU with matching part numbers and send my old away so that they can reprogram it.

I'm assuming that the part numbers do not include the long number above the barcode on the left side. Is that an individual serial no?

No that's the coding number. Ideally, all the top numbers matter. but yes, option 1 will work. Yours may also be repairable. Worth a shot. But, all that ice was water at one time...

Here's my complete code from my ECU and the one I was going to buy from HDi Tuning was exactly the same in all numbers:

Top Left (above barcode) 0 281 017 863 - has to match

Top right 9677006780 - has to match

The long code between the barcodes is the individual serial number but the model must match i.e. EDC17C10 or EDC16C34 in that long code or also below it.

The following are coded into the engine ECU as options so if you have them, or don't have them and if you swap one that's different, it will throw up errors and will need coding with DiagBox to fix that. If HDi Tuning de-immobilise a used one for you, then the Immo PIN is also deleted so keys no longer need coded to the car as it will no longer matter but the coding section must not be touched again or the software will be screwed up. I am sure Steve doesn't do repairs, only software changes.

ECU optional equipment:

Cruise control
Start stop
ESP (will have a deactivation switch with skidding tyre marks)
Air con
75 or 90 PS model etc (if yours is a 75 or 90 then the ECU is functionally the same - the 110 and 120 ones are totally different control systems for turbo and injection so not compatible at all)

Quote from them: Yes you can still make changes to the engine ECU config using diagbox, but only if it’s the correct ECU for the vehicle as you need to go through the menus to get there.

If for example it’s a 207 ECU in a Berlingo then you have to go through the 207 option to be allowed to change the ECU config.

VIN will be from the vehicle the ECU came from, don’t worry it’s not required.

IMMO Pin code is removed along with the software, so don’t try to recode that or it will mess up the ECU


So, it doesn't even have to be a Berlingo one, can be Peugeot 207 or 307 for a B9 or from a Partner. As long as the numbers match on the top of the label at both sides, and the model number (EDC16C34) and the engine HP if it isn't a 75/90 AND it's been decoded to remove the immobiliser, then you can swap it out.

Update: I got an ECU from eBay, total cost including reprogramming (extracting data from the damaged one) was £69. And it works! Very pleased, the van lives another year Smile

That is a great result for not a lot of money and with a little perseverance keeps the vehicle going for a few more years.
Are we there yet????? Huh
