Hello! Potential new Berlingo owner in Sheffield
#1
Hi,

Having finally been told that my insurance claim for a written off vehicle last year has been resolved in my favour (i.e. not my fault), I'm now about to look for a replacement. I've got my eye on a 2.0 HDI (M59) Berlingo Multispace but believe they are fairly hard to come by. Is there anywhere on the site where I can find a checklist of things to look for/questions to ask of the seller for this age and model Berlingo? I'm coming from a position of virtually zero knowledge about these vehicles but have always liked what they do and the way they do it...

All responses gratefully received...

Hi, and welcome to the forum Graham.

On that age of vehicle, probably most important is mileage, service history and cam belt status. Oil changes are required regularly to keep the turbo healthy and it won't have a DPF or any of that stuff, so I'd say as I always do, buy the newest one with the lowest mileage you can find.

People say stupid stuff like "mileage doesn't matter to a diesel" - mileage matters, as does age and service history.

Also go onto the DVLA MOT checker online, put the registration number in and look at the history of fails, advisories and passes. Always handy to know if it failed then passed last time or it had advisories that weren't fixed, you can check on those with the seller. Make sure it doesn't smoke like an old boiler when hot ( a bit of black puff on starting is ok) but no blue or white smoke EVER, and no excessive black smoke while running unless revved hard of course.

I take it you never enter a ULEZ area? These would not be allowed in or would attract a strong daily charge I expect. No DPF.

Thanks, that's sound advice. Sheffield doesn't have a ULEZ (yet) and to be honest the lack of a DPF is a bonus as far as I'm concerned. Good idea about checking on past MoTs. I'll do that now. What is the cam belt change interval on those motors, and is it belt or chain and easy or a pain to do?

Your greatest weapon is being able to wait for a good one to come up, with low miles and FSH etc as Zion says. They do now and then, but you might have to travel! Set up an eBay search* so you get instant email notifications, and keep a regular eye on other sites.

*Don't be too specific - not every 2.0 seller will put 2.0 in the ad's title!

I'd also suggest another approach to the search - research dealers, looking at age and condition of their stock instead of model and spec, and find one with top reviews over a long time, one whose stock rotates, one who impresses you; and then pay a personal visit. If they and their premises still impress you, ask them to keep an eye out for the model, spec, budget you want and discuss timescales. He will be able to search in places we can't guess at as well as tapping up his trade contacts, and with a fairly certain sale on his hands he will make an extra effort to look after you. Hopefully!

On the timing, it's a belt at least on the 1.6 HDi which is the most common engine and the official interval is 150k miles maximum, though I wouldn't leave it till then. I'd go for 80k to 100k I think. If I bought one in that range, I'd get it done.

On the M59, especially the 2.0 HDi then it could well be similar. There will be folk along to put the correct details in for that one. I've had 3 over 10 years but the first was a 1.9D and the next two, 1.6 HDi's.

I've agreed to buy a '55 plate Berlingo Multispace 2.0 HDi with 97k miles on it. The seller will fit a new timing belt kit (inc. water pump) and a N/S wheel bearing (you could hear it grumbling) and put 12 months MoT on it. So now the questions start... Smile
