No probe needed just a finger

feel for the pressure of air escaping as you rotate and when it stops it is at TDC

Just changed these with the head on the bench. That was awkward enough. Saw a good tip on u tube that helped getting old ones out where a blow torch was used to soften the rubber in the old seals before pulling them out. That and modifying an old pair of pliers with the angle grinder to hook underneath them seemed to help a lot.

Thanks all, some good tips. There’s no smoke when running just a little a startup. But my past engines based on his model needed no top up between oil changes and it smells like an old Paraffin heater when running ! We call it ‘Smelly’ because of this. I’ve seen the videos on YouTube, but as I’m about to change the cam belt now would be the best time to do anything else required.
With 180,000 on the clock there’s going to be some wear but it runs like a Swiss Watch.
