[Engine] {SAGA} Timing snapped
#21
With the big red cover off it should look like this, with nothing disconnected:

I can only think any 100A connection should go to / from the alternator. Can you point it out.

250k miles??? O_O

Anyway, hope you get it sorted out at last. That's it been nearly 3 months off the road?

I've tried an ex taxi once, jeez I was never far from a breakdown and gave up in the end. Drive shaft popped out on a bend in the dark one night, next a brake disc split down the centerline of the ventilated section makeing two discs (don't work like that) but the inner face was corrosion-welded to the hub no matter what we tried so needed a full new hub, then a drop link snapped, flipping up into the engine bay and took out all of the drive belts, then a caliper siezed on while braking from 70, locking one wheel, nearly killed me that one, then the window jammed down in the pissing rain from a broken regulator mech...I gave up and limped it into the scrappie.

The Gates part number in the ebay listing is shown as KP15598XS, I don't think that's the correct timing belt kit for your engine, that kit is for the 16 valve engines.

Looking on the Gates site . . .  https://www.gatesautocat.com/

I believe the kit you need for your engine (9HP) is . . .  KP15656XS

Take a look and see if you think the same.

Thank you for that, before I bought the Gates kit I had a look at the compatibility list on eBay and 9HP wasn’t showing so I help off. Can you confirm your previous post is for the non-AC version please? Thanks Smile

I’m getting into a habit of being called the car killer ?

Corsa 04 - engine fire (3 months ownership)

Meriva 05 - wishbones, engine mounts, turbo, oil pump, brake lines, fuel pump, fuel lines, bearings, exhaust, steering rack (all within 2 weeks - 7 months ownership)

Focus C-Max 04 - spat a valve (11 months ownership)

C3 04 - head blew (3 weeks ownership)

Berlingo 12 - timing snapped (3 years ownership)

Sick of changing cars and driving around in my Mrs mk1 Octavia 1.8T 20v VRS is skelping me on fuel and insurance because I’m having to use it for deliveries.

Swore never to go to vauxhall again after the Meriva 1.7 CDTI because that around 4K spent on that just to send it to scrap before I lost my mind. Decided to begin to get my hands dirty after that with the c-Max and more recent cars. Trusting the ex taxi Berlingo Multispace a lot and it’s my own fault the timing went, should’ve got it done a little sooner. It was last done 3 years ago but it’s done 100k+ since then. Because I got the car from my Granda I wanna look after it as best as possible. Never had any mechanical issues until now with it. Only ever had to change the aux belt, eolys fluid, drivers window, and wishbones, track rod ends, drop links and ball joints, so maintenance has been relatively cheaper at under £400 for the lot. The snapped timing belt is an expensive lesson learned so it’ll be looked after more after this episode.

I don’t hammer the cars about, it’s my line of work that takes its toll on the cars with the miles (other than the bastarding meriva - that car can get f**ed on so many levels) ?

Whether the vehicle has AC or not has nothing to do with the timing belt.

Look up and confirm the kit you need on the Gates site, the link is in my last post.

You can look it up on the Dayco site also ...   https://www.daycogarage.com/catalogue/en-us

You may find that you can get a Dayco kit with water pump for £70 on ebay.  Wink

Sometimes it's just bad luck mate. I understand wanting to keep the bingo on the road then, sentimental value. Hey it's all fixable, with the right parts and time. I'm sure you'll get there.

Drive shafts... in my first 'proper' driving job in the late 80s, driving 7.5 tonners for a small cowboy backstreet firm, one day I was crossing what was then the Norman Cross roundabout heading for Leeds, and as I pulled out of it onto the A1, the back end of the truck began leaping about - literally!

Pulled int a layby just north of the roundabout (thankfully) and had a look. Four of the eight bolts on the front end of the prop shaft were so loose their nuts were about to drop off, and the other four bolts were missing.

About a year later I was returning to base on the M25 when I saw one of our other 7.5 tonners on the hard shoulder, rear barn doors shredded, and the boss's Merc parked behind it. Found out back at base that its prop shaft lost all its front end bolts and dropped to the ground, ripping its back end off the rear axle, and then the whole shaft shot through the floor and back doors of the box like a javelin!

Ah, those were the days.

All this reminds me of a near neighbour who drained all of the oil from his wifes lovers 40 ton truck

Back axle blew hauling a full gravel load on the motorway

I bet that relationship ground to a halt pretty quickly after that...

My brother is another car killer...

A Suzuki 413 would last about 4 years with him. That's 4 years from showroom fresh until 'not even suitable as a donor on Scrapheap Challenge.
Then he did the same with the Grand Vitara...
Before all those he had an early Vauxhall Cavalier he also drove to pieces.

What was he doing?
Delivering newspapers in and around Oslo.
The faster you worked the more routes you could do, so the drivers tended to.... take shortcuts.
A ploughed field, a hiking road, a gravel walkway through a park or graveyard... it was all shortcuts.
His mad driving and running a half marathon every night helped him pull in £60.000 every year back then, so he could afford a new car every 4 or 5 years.
