Hi All,
I was wondering if anyone has any advice on underbody rust protection. I am thinking of coating the underside of my M59 on the cheap, basically a spray bottle with my own concoction of lanolin+petroleum jelly + mineral spirit for solvent/evaporation agent. Something like 1 part lanolin + 1 part petroleum jelly and ~4-5 parts (maybe more) mineral spirit. Heat up the lanolin and petroleum jelly to liquid state and add the mineral spirit and this should be stable, i.e. liquid at room temperature and should be relatively easy to spray with a spray bottle. Once this is sprayed, the mineral spirit will evaporate to leave a thin film of lanolin+petroleum jelly to prevent rust. I had a quick experiment with a bare metal nut (soaked it in HCL for several hours to leave pure metal) and with the coating there is no rust for 1 week now outside in the drizzly weather, my bare metal control nut has freshly rusted. The one problem is that I should be fairly careful where I spray as the mineral spirit is somewhat not very friendly to rubber.
I know about fluid film, CRC-type stuff, etc., but they are either too US and not delivered to the UK or way too expensive. Lanolin and petroleum jelly can be bought pretty much anywhere very cheaply. Also, one of the main ingredients of fluid film is lanolin.
I would really appreciate any advice if someone has done it and how long it lasted.
