Just had the renewal through for my van, I'm with Aviva. IIRC I went with them when I first got a van as it was difficult to find someone who would insure a van for 'private' use. I should shop around really to see if I can gat it cheaper (I had to start from scratch with no claims because I had none to transfer as I had/have the Cortina on a classic policy). Obviously there are people on here in the same boat who use their vans privately so I wonder if anyone has any recommendations?
Thanks in advance.

I'm with Esure, 12 years NCB and multicar with the wife's motor so we can both drive both vehicles - costs me £317 a year fully comp for the van insured for private SDP & commuting. Driving other non-owned vehicles is also included at TPFT level.
Worth giving them a try on a comparison site

Try contacting the insurer to see if they would provide you with a letter ( email maybe ) detailing your insurance history with them as " claim free years "
I did this quite some years ago with a result of an introductory discount.
Are you a male ? if so then try getting a female onto the insurance as a named driver you'll likely get a discount from it.
Otherwise just wait until you get some NCB

The 'NCD' is a bit of a crock really, the Cortina policy doesn't accrue NCD and if it did I couldn't use it on the van as I still have insurance on the Cortina... all the companies can check your details at the touch of a key now so they know when you last made a claim anyway, in my case over 8 years ago. IIRC it is easy to change details online with Aviva so I will try it with the O/H as a named driver to give me an idea before going on comparison sites.

Might be a crock but classic insurance is blooming cheap
I have a Series One Land Rover and classic policy - Comp insurance myself and wife driving, no mileage limit, 3mths euro travel covered, included breakdown and recovery service and all for £72 .... I choose to pay a bit more at £114 for agreed value circa £15k,
To sweeten your blossoming NCB career just think of the saving on road tax and no mot it will biy a lot of petrol

If your missus has NCD, then go to ensure and do a multicar policy, you both get to use the highest NCD held by anyone on the policy. I had 10 and she had 12 so we both went straight to 12 when we switched. I got the 12 discount from the start.
They are also more than happy to insure a van as a private car.

Cortina is not tax and MOT exempt for a couple of years, and is off the road now anyway...
Zion, I will look at Esure, thanks.

The wife has just renewed her insurance on the van. She paid £249.44 for Fully Comp, S,D & P. This sum included £15 brokers service charge and £25.00 for optional legal expenses cover so the net renewal fee was £209.44. Granted we are both over 70 and retired but this is in Surrey. Also 13 years protected NCB. Policy is with Sabre Insurance Company Limited. She is main policy holder and reg. keeper and I am named driver.

I remember now why I didn't put the O/H on as a named driver at the time, she had a claim ongoing at the time (not her fault, dragged on for 2 years, but that's another story...)
