Flaky door runner
#1
Hi, first post on here! Newly purchased 2013 Berlingo 2 days ago! Smile

The drivers side runner protective coating is flaking off and on the panel above the runner.

I was wondering what would be best to use to seal/cover/paint both of them with?

Thanks!

I think the car had that part resprayed, maybe after an accident.
It needs to be repainted or changed.

is this what I'm looking for?

This one is chrome : Does anyone know if it is possible to get that painted to match?

That's just an aftermarket add on trim on ebay. Chrome is hard to paint, and it will only be stick on type so it will fall off in time. Better to get a body shop to repaint the peeling part, it won't cost too much for a small area.

Unless trying it yourself, then just tape it off and use a scotchbrite pad to remove the flakes and key it, then paint with satin black. You can mask up the entire side of the car with paper, leaving the rail exposed for painting. Tape carefully round the edges of the rail.

If not confident then just go to a painter / body shop.

The following information was the response given on another forum and it is what I will be following to resolve the exact same issue on my vehicle

"A rub down and mask it off then hammerite smoothright spray covers well. Its not actualy paint its an epoxy, good rub down with wire wool after sanding  - but read instructions on the tin as you can only put one coat on - but covers well. I've sprayed plastic and it sticks to that anything else will peel off"

Yep finigans smoothrite is excellent.

Once it's painted, leave it alone to cure. Putting another coat on after 15 minutes have elapsed, causes it to wrinkle up, and it's hard as stone once set so rubbing it back off is a nightmare. Ask me how I know that Big Grin

So do it in one go, spray from 12" away in even strokes, not too much at a time as you don't want runs. Build light coats - you can keep doing that while it's wet. After 15 mins from the last light coat, it's too late to do any more.

Finigans smoothrite doesn't seem to exist anymore however this seems to be made by a similar/same company

It says it's stainless steel in the description. A pair of those would save you the trouble of painting yours which needs stripping, priming then repainting or it's going to do the same again. It looks like someone has aerosol painted over the smooth original without keying the surface.
So where does this bit go then ?
