I'm OK with the parking brake now - I was just doing it wrong before.  I think the dealer should've given me a quick rundown on how it works - he knew I'd been driving an M49 before, which doesn't even have electric windows, so an electronic parking brake was a bit of a culture shock.  After he gave me the keys and left me to it, I spent 10 minutes in the dealer's car park, trying to work out how to release the brake, lol.
