Exactly what you said about the straight edge jj9. I tried mine on kitchen window and could get the. 25 gauge in the middle. Checked the head with a proper straight edge from local garage and could just get my thinnest gauge of 0.05 in one or two places even this is mainly due to a slight high spot around where injector holes are I think.

That sounds like close enough.
As long as it's not one of those dastardly modern steel gaskets.

It is a bit of a sandwich between steel on both sides. I've torqued it down now. Should I be concerned?

Nah that one is deformable so it will seal.

Glad to hear it
Aye, the old warped straight edge gag . . . you live and learn, every day's a school day for all of us, how do you think I learned the check the straight edge on a window trick
I would happily go with 0.05 . . . the original gasket may have failed due to age, that sometimes happens.
Happy days.

To get rid of the residual oil in the coolant system , a couple of dishwasher cleaner tablets help, run it for while then flush out the system again.

Another top tip with dishwasher tablets. Thanks yes. Only having one locating dowel between the head and block threw me a bit. Even with the bolts in loose the gearbox end of the gasket can be shuffled a bit. Think I set it in the middle. Checked in the haynes and that's just how it is.

Just to update engine seems to be running well. Just need to Mot car before I can check properly that the coolant stays clear. Shimming valves was the most time consuming part of the job for me. As mentioned in poor Jobbjew's thread no1 cylinder being at flywheel end caused a bit of confusion as doesn't seem natural to me and kept measuring or marking down figures under wrong cylinder. I wouldn't want to charge myself for the amount of time this job and clutch has taken me.
