You can get plastic primers which help the paint to stick - if spraying with a gloss finish (rattle can) then finish with a spray leveller or clear lacquer . If you just pick off the peeling bits - I did on mine, using a power washer - as it's an old 'un - then a clear coat makes it look presentable from a distance and slows down the acne.
Mine is red, and all red ones seem to suffer the same fate!
thanks for responding oilyrag, so i need 1 can of plastic primer ,1 can of gloss finish , and 1 can of clear laquer to do the best job ?? not that I'll do the best job mi nd lol, will 1 can of each be enough do you think ,??

Yep, my M49 van is red ("passion red", if I remember correctly), and the lacquer started peeling off the bonnet, roof and (plastic) front grille many years ago. On the bonnet it was precipitated by a pigeon crapping on it after it had eaten blackberries - I should have quickly washed it off. About 18 months ago I had a bit of welding done where the offside sill meets the side panel, and for an extra £100 the bodyshop resprayed the bonnet completely, which seemed a pretty good deal (assuming it lasts).

Best post up a good clear photo of the area so we can get a better idea of what will be required.

Should be enough - you'll need some masking tape and some thinners to degrease the surface before priming. Good luck! (Give time between various coats and choose a warm, dry day. )

You could try picking off the flaking clear coat until you get back to an area where it is sound, then using fine wet & dry paper (wet) carefully feather the edges, if you're lucky they may blend in without disturbing the colour coat too much. The problem is that most of the time the clear is flaking off all over the place, or once you start trying to feather the edges of it the flaking continues.
You would more than likely be better off just sanding it all down and dusting a couple of coats of colour over it then a couple of coats of clear coat. The problem you face is that the colour coat may not be a very good match to the original colour, that said sometimes you get lucky and it's very good match.
