Tailgate tent, awning?
#1
Hi, my partner and I have decided to camp in our car this year, we camp quite a bit but normally in a tent. We would like to get an awning or tailgate tent. Is there one specifically for a Berlingo forte 2003 or is there a generic one that would fit? Any advice appreciated, thanks.

Amdro will sell you a boot jump tent for £430, apparently very good and the original ones were for the M59. The one shown on their website is pictured on a K9 though.

Most people (allegedly) buy a Quechua Base M tent (2.5 x 2.5m) from Decathlon for about £100 and stick the tailgate through the open side.

Some buy Reimo Vertic tailgate tents with varying shades of success. These seem to be supported buy the open tailgate though.

I have an obsolete umbrella awing (Quest Elite) that works on the side or the tailgate (just). It's easy for solo erection.

You pays your money.........

Ah lovely, thanks for the reply. Very helpful stuff, think I'll go for the umbrella awning or Quechua base. Thanks again

The Quest Elite awning is no longer available sadly, had mine for 5 years. They do come up used sometimes.

When I travel with family or friends, on the advice of my brother, I bought a caravan trailer. It does not weigh much and several people can sleep in it, very comfortable. This option https://www.horizonteardrops.com/ is multifunctional and good for long journeys. It also weighs only 550 kg, which significantly saves fuel.

Hi - how do you attach the Quest Elite to the side? It looks to me like it needs to thread along a rail . . .

It can be strapped over the car but I've put c rail on the sides of my rack so I can either attach it direct or with Kador and figure of 8 strips. It does leave an air gap but I have a load of awning skirt and magnets to make draught proofing with.

I could always have glued a rail to the car, did this on my T4 but that went in the roof gutter, doing that would obstruct the rack mount hard points on the Berlingo.

No good pics but got no room in my garden to show it attached to the side properly. It appears to fit very well even when unable to put the guylines out

I've tried it on the rear of the car but not that convinced so ordered a Reimo Upgrade rear (over the tailgate) awning. I'll post a pic or two of how that works, it's for a VW so might end up on the T4.

Hi all.

Has anyone tried one of these or any idea if it would fit on the side of a Berlingo please?

No actual experience of that one but it looks good to me. Should be fine on a Berlingo as it states 1.8m - 2.1m adjustable and the VW T's are only slightly higher.

Only thing that might be a plus or minus, depending on your thoughts, is that at 2.9m long it could possibly be a bit long for a Berlingo. Van shown is a T6 LWB. As long as the tunnel seals OK it should be fine and you'd probably be able to open the passenger doors easily inside. You might have to get creative with tarp clips and bungies to stop some flappage.

Vango stuff is pretty good IMHO and fibreglass poles are light. I've just put a 17 year old Vango tent up to check it before throwing it away (my kids had used it - usually the kiss of death). Poles and fabric all good so a spray with Fabsil will see it used again.

It's a proper drive away too with a removeable groundsheet, side doors, what's not to like?

I would.  Big Grin

Thanks for your reply Biker. Much appreciated.

The wheelbase dimensions are around 2785mm and then there's the back bit. So I'm thinking that it would be ok for it to cover near enough the whole side.

I'm not sure how to use the set up yet as we don't have any boot jump or anything in the car. Was thinking maybe just take the back seats out and use the back for our sim and sleeping bag and use the awning as a changing and eating tent. Wish we had a boot jump but out of our budget and my joinery experience is pretty much zero ;o(
