Two weeks ago I was asked by my sister if I could recommend a vehicle that she could use as an everyday car and also double up as a day/weekend camper, but she did not want to spend too much. I have converted several Fiat Ducato vans into campers over the last 20 years and have never even given a thought to smaller vehicles. Any way after a bit of research I told her that I thought that something like a Berlingo first with a boot jump might be suitable. I found such a vehicle for her in Norfolk and she asked me to buy it on her behalf. I collected the vehicle and drove it to my home (about 50 miles) and her son came up from Essex to collect it for her. The van was a 2006 Berlingo Desire. My wife loved the Modutop roof (she is a storage space nutter) and suggested that something similar may be of interest to ourselves. Anyway, to cut a long story short we have now purchased a 2005 Berlingo Desire which I intend to convert into a Micro camper, but have been given a list of must have features so I shall have to see how it ends up. The modutop in the Desire is brilliant, don't know why they ever changed it.

On small word of caution re the modutop - the two locker doors above either end of the back seat only have hinges which are part of the modutop moulding, and they must not be opened fully.

Kids will open them wide without a thought, and then the hinge will snap and it's impossible to replace unless you replace the whole modutop.

So have a good look at them and think up a way of preventing them form being fully opened before the get broken.

BTW there should be 12v sockets behind them too!

Thanks for the warning Rasputin. When looking for a Desire, I had noticed that several had those locker lids missing. I suppose that the easiest mod would be just to limit the opening with a cord or cable tie, but I expect that someone somewhere has managed to find a mechanical stay to do the job and at the same time hold the lid open. I suspect that any form of hydraulic strut would actually put additional pressure on the hinge - what do most forum members do. I must say that I think the MTop is a really great idea. Geoff.
