Intermediate bearing carrier
#1
Hi Smile

My intermediate bearing is stuck in carrier. WD 40'd and banged on the innside of bearing for half a day.

Loosened carrier. Four bolts socket 16mm removed.
Carrier is still stuck, well almost stuck. Is there a sentering sleeve or something holding it in place? It bugdes 3 millimeters towars boot, but back again due to axle stiffness. Can't move it towards wheel as there are obstacles on the cast iron part of engine.

My next move is angle grinding the shaft on gear side.

Any suggestions?  Huh

Well, you could try heating the carrier with a heat gun or blow torch.
And if you can find a Freeze spray like those used in electronic testing, and give the outer race of the bearing a blast of that after heating the carrier...

On some models at least, this carrier is made of aluminium. If yours is, you should probably stay away from the blow torch...

Had to do this on my M49/1.4i
Not fun...  Particularly reaching the bl**dy bolts to get the carrier out and back in.

Something like a Tite-Reach is invaluable.

Replacing the borked bearing can be a bit of a job, I understand. But before you re-mount the carrier, make certain the new bearing slides in smoothly.

Thank you Gadgetman.

I got it out!!!!!!!  Only bearing isself was rusty. The new one slide in easily. I just cleaned the bearing carrier a little with 180 sandpaper.

To get get that bearing out i used a m16 threaded rod. Angle grinded it on the end to make a nice tap 18 mm long for hitting the bearing from the inside. I think it was about 450 mm long. 550 mm would be better. Big hammer on the other end and finally.

So axle successfully installed, but the vibration is still there.
Was almost sure it was the axle.
Vibration is felt throughout the chassis and steering wheel. Only appears when giving max acceleration.
Seems to be coming from the right side. No misalignment i front and lower ball joint ok.

Could it be the wheel bearing?

Vibration under full throttle sounds like cv joint problems.

Because replacing the bearing on it is a pain in the...
(replaced the axle myself not too long ago... and yes, it was also stuck in the carrier. )
