£270 for front discs and pads
Im more than competant to do the job myself but it would mean lying in the gutter and Im getting older and lazier...
I would have to buy a pad separation winder and the parts.
So far costing well under £100 so on balance it does seem worth it.
Are there any pitfalls too watch for - surely it cant be that straightforward and inexpensive????
It is on my to do list.
But not right at the top

Last bill I paid was on the Grandsons Astra in Sept 2020 - new front flexi exhaust section and new discs and pads, all in for £256 ( £130 in parts )
You won't need a winder ( well I've never used one ever ) just crack the nipple slightly as you lever the old pads away from the disc then tighten before you have any air ingress. Pitfalls, doubt it !
Comes down to wallet and a willingness to watch someone else doing the job, I'm doing more of that these days it seems.

Sorry but from my point of view, if you are going to work on your brakes without knowing exactly what you are doing, is a recipe for disaster.
If you need to ask, then you clearly do not have the knowledge and probably not have the tools either.
Again, sorry to be so blunt, but please leave it to those with the knowledge and correct tools.
You state that you are more than competent, so why are you asking the question?

YES a bit harsh, but when we are talking about working on the braking system of a motor vehicle, I think a reality check is not a bad thing.

The biggest problem will be getting the discs off as you need to move the caliper mounts. As for the amount of money they're asking, you need some alternative quotes, it's not a big or complicated job.
Technical competence? Not a lot really needed, so long as you take care, plenty of advice on yoo tube etc. The best way to move the caliper pistons back is, as mentioned above, by letting the excess fluid out via the bleed nipple, I expect a lot of places will just push them back with a clamp and take the excess out of the reservoir but there is a small chance you get some dirt in the ABS pump that way.

Wrong!
No one was born with spanners in their hands ( your mother will appreciate that)not even you.
Every one has to start somewhere.
I have successfully rebuilt four cylinder motorcycle engines, and deisel injection pumps in the past-just not done front brakes on a 2012 blingo.
Having the tools and having 'experience', does not necessarily make you competent -I know one of the gimps at kwik fit - he has the tools and the 'experience' but I wouldnt let him near my car.
Assuming youre better than others because theyve not done one particular job before does however make you look an idiot on a public forum.
See- youve just learned something that YOU didnt know!
It is on my to do list.

Sorry if this has offended anyone, but it is one of my major concerns with forums and the internet in general.
I have no problem with anyone working on window winders, spark plugs, fan belt etc. But working on brakes requires a certain level of knowledge and the correct tools.
To undertake such a job without either could end up with having no brakes at all.

I agree its not a job for a monkey -but Im not a monkey-and I do still see a lot of very assumptive high horses around.
Some dismounting necessary before theres the danger of a long fall.
With the piousness hopefully out of the way now,
I got the parts on order.
Full set Bosch disks and pads with all the fitting kits included for £82.00 delivered.
It is on my to do list.

If you want to PM me your VIN, I'll see if I can find the 'how to'
