Diesel Fumes
#1
Hi everyone, new to the forum and Berlingo ownership.

We recently purchased a 2001 Berlingo based Romahome. It has the 1.9 diesel (there seem to be a number of variants of this one?)

I have no experience of this engine/vehicle, so looking to get a better understanding.

The vehicle has a fresh full service (oil, filter, cambelt, waterpump, aux belt, glow plugs) new MOT, no advisories,  and has only covered 40000 mls.

It pulls ok, starts and stops as you would expect, and although a little underpowered, it's fine once you have it rolling.

My only concern is an intermittent aroma of diesel exhaust. It doesn't sound as though it has a leak in the system, and I'd be surprised if it got through the MOT without any comment. Any thoughts on what this could be down to? Is it a know phenomenon? Is it a crankcase breather problem??  I have no idea, so just looking for inspiration and helpful comments, even if it's 'they all do that, just live with it'.

As it's not an HDI version, I presume any sort of 'chipping' is not possible??

Many thanks in advance,

iVan (like iPad)

Is the camper body totally separated from the cab? Just wondering if fumes are being drawn in through a vent or bad seal somewhere?

That's a good call. The body is bonded to the roof and the 'b'pillars and is therefore part of the cab. There is no bulkhead behind the seats. It could well be a circulation effect - the exhaust is side mounted (near side), so I suppose it could be from the side windows which have a 'ventilation' setting. I'll have to experiment with different settings. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hiya iVan. I’ve got a Surf Camper. I also have same problem. I think the issue may be related to the fact the exhaust exits under the van. I’m going to look at extending the end of mine to reduce this.

For advice on campers. Quite a few Berlingo based campers on there
