Replacement roof bar keys
#1
Hello,
I’m fairly new to the Berlingo world: 10 weeks now. Firstly, this forum is brilliant; I’ve learned so much about the car from here, so thank you.

One of the latest quibbles with the car is the roof bars. The car arrived (second hand) with them attached, but with no keys. They appear to be genuine Citroen transverse roof bars of this type:

I’m desperately trying to obtain a key for them but having no luck. I tried ordering a random key of the same code, too big. Tried Timpsons but they couldn’t solve it despite really trying hard. Tried the local dealership who contacted the parts hub who said they didn’t have spares…

Does anyone have any idea of the key profile, or better any idea where to get one from?

Thanks very much!

I once got spare Thule roofbar keys from a specialist website. Too easy in fact, considering security implications. No idea whether such sites would also do PSA keys?

Indeed, it seems very easy to obtain specific brands. The issue I encountered was that nowhere seemed to know which type of key would be suitable to these PSA bars.

After much trial and error can confirm it is a 2D series key:

These lovely people persevered and found me the right one.

Weird thing, I’m not really sure what the lock does… after all this effort it turns out I probably didn’t need it anyway. Although the key rotates a plate which seems to block something off it doesn’t seem to make any difference to whether anything locks. Maybe these are just dud though.

Also, these bars don’t seem to need one of the special five-sided Allen keys. Instead it looks like a hex fitting - the gap was too small for my hex keys but a T27 fits it just fine too.

Anyway, this is the mechanism and type of key.

Cheers

I think I have the steel equivalent of your bars. PSA part number 9616x4 - designed for the modutop roof, with the factory fit rails.

I also had a similar query around the purpose of the key cap, as one of the end caps on mine is damaged and easily pops off. Not the end of the world, it’s not structural- one side still locks, and so should be secure enough unless a dedicated thief happens to have a perfectly sized long square shaped thing to poke in and loosen the tension holding everything together.

Anyway - to your question. It appears my PSA bars are actually manufactured by Thule. When trying to figure out my damage situation, I noticed some component numbers stamped into the foot - I searched for these, and they were related to Thule. There is also a made in Sweden stamp, and I even found some old Thule bars on eBay which had this relatively uncommon key on the end cap design, looked exactly the same as mine, except with a Thule logo… and if you didn’t need any more convincing, I noticed the key code stamped on the lock barrel matches the format of my neighbour’s Thule bars… so, if you have a letter, and three numbers, that’s probably the key code you want from Thule!

TLDR, try ask Thule for a replacement key for the number stamped on your barrel!
