[Steering & Suspension] Squeaking suspention

Hi all,

First post for me. My 09 XTR has developed the most annoying squeak you have ever heard. Its coming from the near side suspension near the top mount. I've noticed that it stops in the wet so i tried spraying some lube around the moving parts but this has made no difference at all. I tried tightening the top strut mount nut thingy under the bonnet and it looked like the whole thing was turning with the nut? I'm suspecting the shock needs replacing. Am I right? (I am by no means a mechanic). Any advice would be most appreciated before I start ordering parts unnecessarily. TIA

Might not be related, but I noticed the bottom coils of my b9 rear springs are wrapped in (already cracked) plastic tubing. Car has always been main dealer serviced. Maybe that is some band aid for unwanted noises.

Is the squeak when you travel in a straight line, or as you turn the steering wheel? Does it make the noise when turning the steering but not moving forwards or back?
The nut on top of the strut may sometimes turn the strut at the same time but it can be tested & tightened by using a Torx key into the top of the strut while turning the nut with a spanner.

It may be the top strut bearing thats worn . Your strut will be probably OK as Cancunia says its normal to turn like that.
