I've noticed a sound - sort of mild rattle/friction noise, when the clutch is released and the car's stationary. I gather releasing the clutch engages the input shaft. When the clutch is engaged no noise, other than general engine clatter. Is this a case of 'they all do that sir', or a possible problem? Car runs fine otherwise.
Thanks, Rob

The input shaft does start to move when the clutch is raised - in neutral, clutch up, it will rotate at engine revs. If the gearbox input shaft bearings are worn this may cause a 'roar' which disappears when the clutch is pressed down. If a gear is engaged the input shaft is stopped and the noise will also disappear.
A possibly cause could also be the clutch release bearing assembly and light pressure on the clutch pedal should affect the noise - either making it worse or it goes away!
Have a check of the gearbox oil level just in case there's not much there.
Other than that it's probably a case of keeping an ear on it - could last a long time before needing any serious work.
