Car won’t start

Hi all, I’m after some advice please.

My 2006 Berlingo 1.6HDI one morning decided it wouldn’t start in the morning.

We’ve checked with a basic OBD scanner and had a fault code for the Crank Sensor and/or Cam Sensor. We changed both for OE parts however this hasn’t fixed the problem and the codes still appear and can’t be cleared. Possibly something to do with the cheap OBD reader?

So we’ve since changed the fuel filter as we had a spare and primed the fuel system yet it won’t start, tested the power going to the crank and cam sensors which shows 4.5v? Shouldn’t it be 5v? Does this indicate an issue?

Besides this I’ve noticed the glow plug light doesn’t come on, borrowed a friends relay just to see and still no light coming on?

Decided to spray so easy start in the intake and the engine fires for a brief second and the dies..

Could anyone advise if they’ve had this issue or know what could be wrong. We can’t move it so possibly may need to get it towed to a garage or have a mobile mechanic come out.

Any help would be appreciated.

I would look at the Crank Sensor. Its quite a common issue for water ingress in the plug/bad contacts on the pins. They also have a bad habit of working loose. Take the plug out, clean it with contact cleaner, not WD etc and replace BUT make sure that the sealing ring slides into the socket with the plug ALL THE WAY HOME and "clicks" because if it doesnt it wont make a sound contact and will either cut out intermittently on a running engine or fail completely and wont start. They very rarely fail completely as a part. Easy thing to rule out before you get to the expensive stuff. Happened to mine so wort a punt..

The glow plug light won't come on unless it's really cold at around freezing point and then only for a few seconds. The HDi engines don't really need glow plugs to start except in extreme conditions so I wouldn't worry about that.

It could be the wiring to the crank or cam sensor as mentioned above.

Does your OBD reader support a bluetooth connection to your phone, if so can you run the Android Torque app and see what is happening with other real time sensors like rail pressure & rpm?
