[Engine] Acceleration issues
#1
Morning everyone, I have a 2006 diesel 1.9 with acceleration dead spots and slight kangarooing.
Last year I had an new ERG sensor (genuine part fitted by a van specialist garage) fitted, and the severe running issues I had were cured. A few months ago, started to get the present problems. It was intermittent but now all the time. Starts ok, but between second and third gear at 2000 rpm, the engine hesitates and picks up if I put the accelerator flat down. I've took it on a good run, and it'll do the same if coasting at 50/60 mph, or when coasting at any speed.

I don't use supermarket diesel. I've tried Wynns cleaner but no joy. The garage have had a look, and experienced the faults, the mechanic saying when you put your foot flat down on the gas it picks up ok. They gave me their stock brand of cleaner, which improved things a little, and said if not cured then they could try changing the fuel filter, and if that failed then the only option is to have the injectors refurbished by a specialist. Obviously, the latter takes me into a decision of value and age of van against repair bill choice.
Anyone experienced the same issues and found a cure please?

Did they change the filter or just suggest it? If they haven’t I would definitely as for it to be changed and the housing cleaned.

Thanks- not yet so I’ll give it a go.
If that doesn’t work , I’m guessing refurbed injectors are expensive.

I was having all sorts of issues there with dropped rpm, erratic rpm, spluttering, low power and funny smells off the exhaust. Garage found metal fines in the filter housing and suspected the HP pump was on it was out. After changing the filter I’ve had no more issues over 500 miles of driving.

So I would start with the filter which is a reasonably cheap option.

I'm back again with my acceleration problem. I've had a new fuel filter fitted today, and whilst there is an improvement (quicker at lower speeds) I still have the juddering and dead spots. The garage mechanic said he noticed an improvement when he did a test run after fitting, but he still got the juddering. The garage have suggested I give it a few days, and if unhappy the next thing is to take the injectors out to be sent away for tlc. They said it will cost in 3 figures and I'll get a firm estimate if I take her in, but any views on a reasonable amount to pay please? I don't want to pay too much in view of age and value (2006, 103k, 2 seat van).

Dont know the 1.9 diesel but does it have a crank-sensor. If yes, pull the connector, clean and see wot happens. its a real pain with these engines...

Really you should have it checked for any fault codes (DTCs) with lexia/diagbox or a code reader

It could be the EGR valve sticking or air mass sensor faulty or even drawing air into the fuel system

Its not really done an awful lot of miles for a 1.9 so I would check out everything else before condemning the injectors or fuel pump

Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll give it a go. I guess I just wipe over the connector with a clean cloth, or what should I clean the sensor with?

Thank you. I’m trusting the garage have done that . They are a very large commercial vehicle repair specialist. They repair some national companies’ fleets including artics. There are no warning lights on the dash, and she starts straight away and no blue smoke from the exhaust. They fitted the new EGR valve last year, and having reminded them of that I’m trusting they have checked/ ruled it out. The mot is due in 5 weeks and I’m weighing up how much to spend on her.

It’s me again. Well she passed the mot with no advisories, bless ‘er. I’ve still got the kangarooing though. They say next step is injectors refurbishment, but a couple of other mechanics have said that is radical without trying other things. One has a diagnostic code saying it’s the MAS , and he suggests starting with that, but thinks the connector wires are pulled too tight by someone in the past not fitting leads correctly, and that the air filter box is too loose. Are these possible causes to affect the MA sensor and in turn cause the kangarooing?
