ABS fault messages
#1
Hello all,

I'm getting a regular bleep and 'ABS' message in the MFD - and then occasionally the 'BRAKING FAULT' message in the MFD and associated red STOP! on the instrument panel.

(The ABS warning light on the instrument panel has never lit up).

I plugged my Diagbox Lexia and it appears to deny the validity and/or existence of three of the wheels.

Any idea what this might mean or how I can solve the issue?

Thanks loads!

James

That’s the first thing I did.

Things to check, if you haven't already cured this. Check the wheel sensors on the wheels listed for a build up of rust around the sensor attachment. This may need you to remove the sensor which [in my case] was held on with a torx headed bolt and had to be soaked for a long while to be free enough to undo. If you get a build up of rust under the sensor mount, as it is only plastic, it bends and the gap between the sensor and the pick-up ring on the wheel becomes too great and you get an error. If you have got corrosion clean it all off and refit sensors.

It is quite unusual for three to go all at once though, so the other thing to check is the connector at the ABS unit itself, which is at the front end of the nearside front wheel arch and requires you to take the wheel off and the wheel arch cover out to get access. Check the connector for security of fitment, damage or any corrosion on pins [normally they look green if corroded] and clean the pins with either IPA or a specialist contact cleaner like Servisol electric contact cleaner. Do not clean electrical contacts with WD40 or suchlike as they leave a residue on contacts and can cause more problems than they cure.
