I'm sure this will have been covered by now - but my searches are fruitless.
Any tips (or 'gothcas') for changing the thermostat pls?

Changing the stat is very straightforward - put a washing up bowl underneath and catch the coolant if you plan to re-use. Don't worry about draining the system down as it will drain when you take the stat housing off. Read up on bleeding the system after the change as there is the risk of air locks, which may take more than one attempt to clear.
Good luck!

When I did mine (twice, but that's another story...) it didn't come with the bleed valve. I found it very difficult to get the old one in the new housing despite lubricating the O ring. I ended up breaking one of the tags that hold it in place and damaging the thread. I put a small cable tie round it to hold the tags together and PTFE tape round the threads but it still leaked slightly. As it happened there was a small 'blind' blanking hose in the van when I got it that fitted the stub on the housing perfectly. I'll have to re-think it if I have to bleed it again.
A 1/4 drive socket and extension are handy for getting to the bolts and I found it easier to push the housing onto one of the hoses at the back and then fit it.
My van: 2008 Berlingo 1.6 HDi Enterprise - a bit ratty!

Just a quick follow-up. All done. There are two types of thermostat housing came up for mine and it is the difficult to see 'rear' part which is different...so be sure to get the right one for your vehicle.
Was quite straightforward to do...and the improvement is great with a much faster warm up (within a few miles in autumn temperatures) and more heat from the heater. Sits as it should at 83 deg C
