Gearbox Judder
#1
Hi,

I wonder if anyone cal help me diagnose an issue with my Partner Tepee manual?

I found a post that sounded related, but its for a semi-auto, so that wasn't the issue.
https://www.berlingoforum.com/thread-201...ht=gearbox

I suspect this may be a general mechanical issue that could affect any car and is not Partner/Berlingo specific, but just in case, I thought i'd start here in case its a known issue.

I have an intermittent judder and the only way I can think to describe it would be that its like i've tried to set off in the wrong gear and the car has tried to stall; ie: tried to leave a set of traffic lights in 4th, rather than 2nd and the car does that big jolt like its about to stall and you need to get the clutch in quick to catch it.

This jolt will happen when you are in the correct gear though and can happen even when you are on the motorway and maybe go to accelerate; again in the correct gear, i've noticed it when speed has dropped to around 50mph and i've stayed in 5th gear and slowly tried to get back up to 70mph as traffic allows, but it will also happen in 2nd if you slow for a corner, or if accelerating in 3rd where 3rd is the correct gear.

It can be managed by adapting driving style and at times staying in a gear lower than should be nessesary, but it is annoying.

The other thing that may, or may not be true here is that I think it is worse if I have been using the car consistently for say a couple of hours and may get better when its gets rested and cools down for maybe 30mins to an hour.

Other things to note ...
This is a high milege van
The gear selector is pretty sloppy, but the gears do engage and we are correctly in gear when this hiccup happens

Any help is greatly appreciated,

Stephen

Possibly air/fuel related - don't think it's a gearbox issue.

It doesn't feel like a mis-fire, but given this is a little intermittent it'll be one of tose things thats hard for a garage to diagnose ... if we were to check air/fuel if even just to rule it out, can you sugest how we might go about that?

You could try an OBD reader connected to the Torque app on a phone. I think that will allow data collection for things like rail pressure, airflow, boost  etc. Failing that, Diagbox will do data logging.

Maybe try removing the air filter - a blocked or oily one could give similar symptoms.

10 points to all who suggested fuel, or air related

I've now got a recurring eml showing me a low fuel pressure at the fuel rail every time we hard accelerate.

Have read a few posts and most suggest the fuel filter to be changed, but this was done fairly recently, but i'm thinking in the first instance that i'll run a fuel system cleaner through and try and see if I can muddle through a tank of fuel, then change the filter again

Good idea to use the cleaner, and  considering the low cost, to afterwards change the fuel filter and be sure that the housing is correctly sealed.
Good luck!
