I have a whistling sound from the alternator. It charges well. Is it urgent to replace it? regards Leif

If its a V belt then its probably that that's making the noise. Quite common.
Try putting some water on the belt when running , if noise goes away then you have found the problem.

With the belt slack you can wriggle the pulley and see if there's any play in the bearings. If it rattles around then the bearings are shot and a replacement is due - if it feels good, but is noisy the run it, as above. Worth checking, if there's one present, the idler pulley as these can be even noisier than the alternator, but cheap enough to replace. With the belt off, spin the pulley - any noise shows wear.

For me the urgency in repair comes when it fails!
Having recently changed my serpentine belt i would get a tensioning tool as Citroen made it a right bugger to change the belt without one!
Then you will be good to go and the job will be easy.
The tensioning tool has a square end that fits into the arm of the tension pully allowing you to pull it back for enough slack. Could Citroen have made this so you could fit a half inch drive in there? Oh yes...did they....no!
It's a 2001 1.9d with 322,500 k on the clock.

Hello all,
I’m hoping someone can help. I’m attempting to change the alternator belt (it fell off) which I believe is also called the serpentine belt?
How do I determine my engine? I’m trying to do this with the assistance of a Haynes manual!
I have a 2002 multispace forte, manual, diesel (no air conditioning as this seems to have some relevance)
I believe I may need a special tool to adjust the tensioner pulley backplate bolt although I am able to turn this by hand!
Any help greatly appreciated, I’m no mechanic but am suitably practical but just can’t figure it out. It’s not the most accessible and nothing that I see under the wheel arch ties up with the manual.
Many thanks
Guy

Look at your chassis number there is a engine code in there. It may be a DW8B going by the year which would be a WJY engine.
VF7GB RHY B ******** is for a 2.0 DW10 2006 berlingo van
VF7MB WJY B******** is a 1.6 dw8B 2001 van

You can try inputting your reg into the Opie Oils website to get info on the engine.
